I was so impressed with this woman! Originally from Mexico, she and her family were helped in immigrating to the US by a very nice family from OR, who took them under their wing and helped them. Now living in Chicago and working for Amtrak, she follows her father's footsteps and takes her immediate and extended family to see all parts of her city and our country... She was so energetic and inspiring. She also decorates her train car with Mexican motifs... which she put up and takes down at the start and end of her shifts!
So many of the people one meets on the trains are tied to the trains in some way. This man was a professional photographer working on a series for National Geographic.
Please note that I didn't take that many pics of individuals on the train because doing so seemed too invasive, somehow objectifying or capitalizing on a personal interaction.
I arrived in Chicago late morning. All westward Amtrak trains from the east go through Chicago, a beautiful city to which many of my University of MI friends headed after school, as did many of my own family members! Housing costs there are probably half of those in the Boston area. The trains seem to arrive from the east in the morning and from the west in early afternoon.
If you decide to travel by train, one key thing to realize is that Amtrak trains can run very late!!! Don't pen yourself in by scheduling things too tightly!
In this album are pictures from my visits through Chicago on the way out and then back.
