English 9th and 11th Grades
Mrs. Katie Wingate
About Mrs. Wingate:
Welcome! I'm glad to have you in my room this year. I love all things English (It's okay if you don't, but I'll do my best to win you over!). Since 2017 I have taught English to some combination of 8th - 12th grades with a mix of reading intervention and various honors classes.
I received my B.A. in English from Wichita State University, and a Masters in Teaching from WSU in 2019. I am married to Mr. Wingate and we live with our sweet kitty, Ziggy.
Dr. Jordan Peterson once wrote on his X account, "If you're not willing to be a fool, you cannot become a master." In short, I hope you are willing to take a chance this year. No one is perfect (you and I both!), but we can fight for that goal. The study of English literature, composition, and grammar is an awesome adventure. I hope you see it that way by the end of your time with me.

Syllabus
Students will receive a paper copy of the syllabus in the first week of school.
You will receive your English textbook at the beginning of the first semester. You will have one volume to use throughout the entire year. In addition to textbook readings, we will read two class novels. Students will also be expected to read at least one independent fictional book of 250 pages or more for each of the four quarters. We will also study Latin roots, vocabulary associated with readings, grammar, and various essay writing.
Your English textbooks will consist of two volumes of American literature. Additionally, we will read two novels outside of your issued textbooks. All students will be expected to read at least one independent reading book of 250 pages or more for each of the four quarters. We will study grammar, various essay writing, and vocabulary associated with readings. While a great deal of the class consists of independent work, students can expect to engage with the rest of the class through speeches, Socratic Seminars, and small group activities.
If you need to meet me for help with your work, feel free to stop by for a few minutes before school (7:15 a.m. - 7:30 a.m.) or after school (2:51 p.m. - 3:35 p.m.). I will meet with students during my plan period if they email me in advance. My room is locked during lunch.
