DE-99 FAQ!!
We strongly recommend your son or daughter get his or her Learner's Permit/Instructional Permit (IP) as soon as possible as they need that for one year before they can get the next license (usually Restricted). This also allows you to legally practice with them on the road. If you have not picked them up yet, the DE-99s are available at Goddard Academy from the hours of 7 AM - 3 PM. The DE-99 slip would allow them to legally drive with you only during Driver Ed, but we cannot stress it enough that this is not their Learner's/Instruction Permit and they would still need to exchange the DE-99 for the Instruction Permit at the DMV. We can drive the students during Driver Education without the Instruction Permit as we have an instructor DE-99 which allows us to ride with them. Students need to have their Instruction Permit for 1 year before they can get their Restricted license and the one year clock does not start until they have the actual Instruction Permit.
In summary, the DE-99 has the same restrictions as the Learner’s/Instruction Permit so that they can drive with an adult (over 21). However, it does not start the one year clock! Therefore, take the DE-99 and exchange it for the permit ASAP!
