The holiday season officially began in early December! The popular "Candy Cane Trail" event at Freer Field returned and is brighter than ever, offering a nearly mile-long, dazzling experience featuring approximately 200,000 lights.
The free walk-through event, located at 1301 Park Street, Ashland, OH, was open from dusk until 9:30 p.m. through January 5 2026, and provides a delightful way for families and students to embrace the holiday spirit and create lasting memories. Last year alone, the trail attracted an impressive 18,000 to 20,000 visitors, and organizers hope to exceed that number this year with new additions.
The Magic Behind the Lights
This spectacular community gift is a collaborative effort between the City of Ashland, the Ashland County Park District, and local business owners, Dick and Ronda Poorbaugh, of Grandpa's Cheese Barn & Sweeties Chocolates. The initial idea for the trail came to Ronda while walking the field one day.
Bringing this winter wonderland to life is no small feat. It takes about a month for a dedicated team of 10-15 people to set up all the lights and displays. According to Rebecca Grant, who was interviewed for this article, while they've had a minor hiccup with a flipped breaker, the lights themselves have always worked, ensuring the magic continues nightly.
What's New This Year?
This year's trail is "bigger and better" than ever, with organizers adding an extra snowman friend, over 40 new illuminated Christmas trees, more than 400 light-up candy canes, and three new Christmas scenes to the path.
The event previously earned a Guinness World Record title for the "Largest display of illuminated metal structures/sculptures" in 2024 with 776 displays, and this year's additions likely help the community break its own record.
The Candy Cane Trail is entirely free to the public, though donations are gratefully accepted to help cover costs. Visitors can expect not only the incredible light displays and numerous photo opportunities but also special event nights that have included free hot chocolate and crafts in the past.
Freer Field is a central hub for community events, also hosting the annual Balloon Festival and Fourth of July fireworks, making it a beloved spot year-round.
