Immersing young learners in a rich language environment is key to understanding both oral and written language. In the ELC we thoughtfully and intentionally immerse our learners in written and oral language experiences designed to support their understanding of reading, writing and oral communication. Our primary language of instruction is English, however we value and encourage the use of all Home Languages within the classroom, including Romanian. ELC learners benefit from the modelling and sharing of reading and writing by teachers, which in turn allows them to build the knowledge, required skills and deep understandings about how language works. In all ELC classrooms, learners will have opportunities to interact with others in appropriately challenging experiences. Learners will have opportunities to understand and practice the skills needed to use, decode and comprehend texts and experiment with the writing process. They will also have opportunities to gain phonological awareness, build writing stamina and read a wide variety of texts.
