To graduate students need to satisfy:
Course requirements
Competency and Testing Requirements
Readiness Seals
NOTE: High schools do not retain or hold students back a grade; instead, students earn credits towards graduation. If a student does not pass a class by scoring at least 60%, they would need to repeat it which would extend their time in high school. If they fail multiple classes, then they would need to repeat multiple classes. That is why it is important that students use their time wisely so that they graduate ON TIME.
Some schools label students based on how many years they have been in high school, but the credit requirements are the same. In this case, students may be in 12th grade several years before they earn enough credits to graduate.
In general, a student is in a particular high school grade based on how many credits they have earned:
9th Grade or Freshman 0 - 4.5 credits earned
10th Grade or Sophomore 4.75 - 9.5 credits earned
11th Grade or Junior 9.75 - 14.5 credits earned
12th Grade or Senior 14.75 credits and up
