Hello there! My name is Elvira González-Salmón (she/they) and I'm a PhD student. I am doing a PhD on Social Sciences, focusing on bibliometrics. I am interested in the relationship between gender, funding allocation and topic selection of researchers.
In this "blog" I will be telling you all about my PhD journal: goals, achievements, pitfalls, findings, conferences, readings, etc.
I'm from Cantabria, a seaside region in the north of Spain. I hold an International Relations bachelors degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a History of Politics and Society Masters from Utrecht University, where I wrote a MA Thesis under the supervision of Prof. dr. Maarten Prak.
After I finished my Masters, I (almost accidentally) stumbled across scientometrics thanks to a JAE-intro fellowship at the IPP-CSIC. Working with Zaida Chinchilla-Rodríguez during that year enlightened me and showed me the world of opportunities that bibliometrics can offer to a researcher, so I moved to Granada to start a PhD with both Zaida and Nicolás Robinson-García as supervisors at Universidad de Granada.

The main goal of my PhD is to identify and explain a possible relationship between gender inequality in the scientific system and the type of knowledge it generates. The main contribution is to serve as a starting point for the design of a research agenda on gender and science that goes beyond the lack of opportunities for women in science. In other words, to highlight the need for an equal, sustainable and fair scientific system to ensure the production of scientific knowledge that is up to the challenges of today's society.
As most scientists, I am not working alone and I am a member of some research groups:
The COMPARE project focuses on team dynamics and the profiling of researchers. This is the Radiohead-vibes website of the project!
The RESPONSIBLE proyect, led by Zaida Chinchilla-Rodríguez, aims at finding accountable metrics for academic career advancement
I am also part of the Unit of Excellence U-CHASS (Unidad de Excelencia de Ciencias Sociales y Humanas Computacionales)
I am also part of the RESPECT fellowship programme, part of The Racial Equity in Scientific Practices: Examinations of Careers and Topics (RESPECT), an NSF-funded project (#2152288) that investigates intersectional inequalities in science.
Lastly, here's an easy way to get to know me a bit more: these are my favorite book, album, movie and TV show.
