Palacio de la madraza

The Madrasa of Granada (Arabic, ﻣﺩﺭﺴة, 'school'; also called Yusufiyya, House of Science or Madrasa Palace) was the first public university of Al-Andalus and the only one that has been partially preserved. It was inaugurated in 1349 by the Nasrid King Yusuf I of Granada. At present, this palace belongs to the University of Granada, dedicating almost the entire building to cultural activities. It is also the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. Located in what is now called Oficios street, La Madraza was situated in one of the privileged surroundings of the city, next to the Great Mosque and the Alcaicería, the noblest area of commerce. Among its professors we can name Ibn al-Fajjar, Ibn Lubb, Ibn Marzuk, al-Maqqari, Ibn al-Khatib, etc. There they taught, among others, Law, Medicine and Mathematics.

Getting there

La Madraza is located in the historical quarter of Granada. The best options to get there are by bus or taxi, although we recommend walking if already in the city center.

Granada is a very touristic city, with flights and trains arriving every day. We recommend visiting the Patronato web page for more information.
