A current trend in research focuses on using grit and growth mindset to embrace mistakes and foster perseverance. Angela Duckworth is known for her research in grit, which is the combination of passion and perseverance when working towards a goal. Duckworth indicated a correlation between being gritty with Carol Dweck’s growth mindset theory. Although the literature surrounding grit and growth mindset sounds promising, the two widely known trends fail to provide explicit instructional strategies to teach grit through a growth mindset in a practical way for classroom teachers. If grit and growth mindset match up to all the hype suggested by current research, how do classroom teachers find time during the jam-packed, daily schedule to teach skills that are not included in the curriculum or grade-level standards?
