Should I have my student tested for giftedness?
Students with gifted and talented abilities often display advanced characteristics, as compared with students of the same age. If several GT characteristics are observed on a regular basis over time, Gifted and Talented testing might be considered in order to identify possible educational needs and provide appropriate services.
Gifted and Talented Characteristics
Who can request Gifted and Talented identification testing?
Testing for 1st-5th grade students displaying GT characteristics can be requested by anyone at anytime during the school year through May 1st. Students in grades K-2 are encouraged to wait with formal testing until their GT Planned Experiences and/or aptitude assessments indicate GT testing readiness. Students identified as GT in other public school districts, who can provide acceptable testing documentation, will begin GT Services after their documentation is received and approved by the district.
How will GT testing be administered?
If you give permission, your student will be pulled out of their regular classroom for 6-9 small group testing sessions during the next available testing round. Testing sessions are arranged between the GT facilitator and the classroom teacher and will not exceed one hour in length.
How will my student qualify for identified GT Services?
After testing is complete, the campus selection committee will review results and forward recommendations to the district selection committee for placement decisions.
How will I be notified of the GT identification testing results?
At the end of the testing round, after the district selection committee has met, your student will bring home a sealed envelope informing you of their test results and the district placement decision. If your student qualifies, additional information will be included for parent/guardian review. If your student does not qualify, they must wait one year before retesting.
If my student qualifies for identified GT Services, how will they be served?
Identified GT Services are designed to develop critical and creative thinking skills, problem solving skills, and reference skills for students demonstrating gifted abilities. Upon identification, GT students will receive an individualized GT Services and Curriculum Plan, based primarily on the criteria found under the Curriculum tab. GT curriculum participation will begin at the start of the next 9 week grading period, with parent/guardian permission.
