Kang Hyo-Jeong, a Master's student of Flow Information Lab, receives the Korean Society of Fluid Machinery's Outstanding Presentation Award
(June 27, 2025)
Kang Hyo-jeong (advised by Professor Kim Hyeong-Ho), a master's student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Gyeongsang National University, received the Excellence in Presentation Award at the 'Korean Society of Fluid Machinery (KSFM) Summer Conference' held at Pyeongchang Alpensia Resort on June 27.
The ‘Korean Society of Fluid Machinery,’ established in 1996, has contributed greatly to the technological exchange and academic development in the field of fluid machinery. It currently has 10 divisions, including pumps and turbines, fans and compressors, and gas/steam turbines. It is the highest-level academic society in Korea, with approximately 600 participants in each of the summer and winter academic conferences.
Master's student Hyo-Jeong Kang presented a paper titled "재배 환경 개선을 위한 전산유동해석기반 최적의 딸기 스마트팜 공조시스템 위치에 관한 연구 "
In this study, Kang Hyo-jeong analyzed the optimal cultivation conditions through the adjustment of the location of the air conditioning system in order to increase production and improve quality in the recently popular strawberry smart farm. This study was conducted with the support of the Small and Medium Business Technology Information Promotion Agency's Startup Growth Technology Development Project.

A research team led by Professor Hyoung-Ho Kim at Gyeongsang National University (Flow Information Research Lab – Master's student Md. Didarul Islam and undergraduate student Hyo-Jeong Kang) has collaborated with Professor Young-Ho Choi at Seoul Boramae Medical Center to develop a novel method for evaluating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This method utilizes a breathing diagram (BD) derived from upper airway models obtained through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis.
Unlike conventional approaches that separately consider morphological and fluid dynamic factors, this research introduces the breathing diagram as a new concept that allows simultaneous evaluation of both aspects. By leveraging the breathing diagram’s potential applications, researchers can analyze breathing power (BP) and the shape of the breathing diagram. The area enclosed within the breathing diagram curve represents breathing power (BP), quantifying the dynamic energy required for respiration.
This newly proposed method is expected to serve as an alternative to traditional polysomnography, enabling a more efficient diagnosis and evaluation of OSA. The findings of this research have been published in the journal Physics of Fluids under the title: "A new approach to evaluate obstructive sleep apnea according to body mass index using breathing diagram"
This study was supported by the Korea Research Foundation’s Mid-Career Researcher Support Program and an internal research grant from Seoul Boramae Medical Center.
