Mathematics at Work 10 is a graduation credit type high school mathematics course.
Students in Mathematics at Work 10 will explore the following topics:
Measurement systems
Surface area
Pythagorean theorem
Right triangle trigonometry
Similar polygons
Angles
Perpendicular and parallel lines
Unit pricing
Currency exchange
Income
Basic algebra
Assessment falls into two broad categories, formative and summative, both of which measure a student’s progress towards meeting an outcome.
Formative assessment is assessment which takes place while the outcome is still being taught. It is used to inform the teacher’s practice and to provide the student with feedback on their learning. Formative assessment will not influence a student’s final mark. In this class formative assessment will include informal observations, student conversations, spot checks on practice work, exit slips, and potentially other approaches.
Summative assessment is assessment which takes place after an outcome has already been taught. It is used to determine to what extent a student has met an outcome and will result in a student’s final mark. Students will always be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate their learning, with later assessments superseding newer ones. The reason for this is that a student who does not understand an outcome in October, but who shows they fully understand it in November has fully met the outcome. In this class summative assessment will include student conversations, assignments, quizzes, tests, a final exam, and potentially other approaches.
In order to support the growth and learning of students there are a number of expectations in this class. My core expectations are:
Students must be respectful to each other, staff, the building, and themselves. There will be no tolerance for disparaging remarks, especially those made on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, heritage, etc.
Students must follow all safety rules and procedures, including all COVID-19 related precautions.
Students must put forth their best effort to learn in class. This includes not only coming prepared and ready to work, but also being willing to take chances and make mistakes.
Students must not use their phones in class unless explicitly given permission, and when using their phone it must be to support their learning.
Students will always have opportunities to receive extra help or to work on their missing or late work. I am almost always available at lunch for help, though I do request that students ask in advance so that I can find a room for us to work in.
Student progress will be communicated throughout the year via emails or telephone calls home and updates to PowerSchool Gradebook. Once per term progress will also be communicated via a report card and parent-teacher interviews.
