Word Work
Vowel Teams
When 2 vowels are side by side, most often we will hear the first vowel say "its own name". For example, in the word "leak" we heard the e make ad eeee sound and don't hear the a. Practice this concept with the game below
CVC Blends
Practice listening for beginning, middle and end sounds with this CVC (consonant/ vowel/ consonant) game. When reading CVC words, make sure your child blends the sounds together (reads smoothly) rather than segmenting each sound individually.
Digraphs
Digraphs are letters that are read together as one sound. When children are notice digraphs automatically within words it makes reading much easier. If your child isn't noticing digraphs in books, use a piece of paper to isolate the digraph so they see it as one sound.
Blends
Blends are letters that are commonly seen together in words, like "dr" in drum, drink and drive. Oftentimes the individual sounds in blends are hard to hear. Practice listening for small units of sound by playing this game.
