MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning

http://macpheecentre.ca/

The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning (MCCL) is dedicated to empowering youth between the ages of 12-19 by connecting passion with purpose through the arts. Their goal is to bridge the learning gap in individuals disengaged in traditional education or who face barriers in accessing creative learning programs. By doing so, we are developing Nova Scotia’s youth to be engaged and dedicated community members. Working together with schools and community partners MCCL offers a range of creative programs throughout the year ranging from music, drama and painting to fine arts and dance. Through partnerships with local artists and musicians who are inspired to help youth find their creative passion, the centre provides high-calibre instruction and mentorship that complements traditional education. The creative learning programs also demonstrate to youth career and entrepreneurial opportunities that are possible when you develop a love of life-long learning.

Weekday programs at the MacPhee Centre are free-of-charge for youth ages 12-19. If you’re interested in taking part in a program with the MacPhee Centre simply fill out the registration form on their webpage.

SHAD is an award-winning enrichment and entrepreneurship program and network that empowers exceptional high school students – at a pivotal point in their education – to recognize their own capabilities and envision their extraordinary potential as tomorrow’s leaders and change makers.

Each year, Shad provides the opportunity for more than 900 students from across Canada and internationally to attend their STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) month-long program, in-residence at one of their Canadian host universities. Upon completion, these students become part of our impressive SHAD network. SHAD builds on the STEAM foundation, introducing participants to a multi-disciplinary program that offers exposure to big ideas, unique experiences and often leaves students with a new understanding of the world. Speakers include top university professors, business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators, inspiring students to set aspirational goals. They help students gain confidence and encourage them to find ways to start making a difference. Participants also develop an entrepreneurial mindset by innovating solutions to a big complex issue. This unique experiential learning part of the program includes being challenged with a social or economic problem and working with their peers to bring their solutions to life.

Camp Courage

www.campcourage.ca

The primary purpose of the camp is to introduce young women to careers as first responders. The camp will aim to provide information, inspiration, education and opportunities to experience the physical demands, thereby allowing a more accurate perception of what it takes to act in these roles. The ultimate goal is that young women will leave with a sense of empowerment and the confidence to believe that they can achieve any goal, career or dream they desire. The camp is 100% free. In order to be accepted into camp you must write an essay on one of two topics: how you can improve someone else’s life that is less fortunate, or how you can improve your community. Instead of paying cash, you have to do what you’ve proposed in your essay. The only limitation is your imagination. This illustrates how hard work creates opportunities. It teaches to be thankful for what you have and to respect others that have less, It teaches the value of helping others.

Camp Courage accepts only 24 participants each year, and entrance essays are due March 31st! Camp dates: July 7 - July 14, 2019
