Ken Langille Memorial Bursary
About
The SSTA Education Scholarship was established in 1992 to offer financial assistance to a student enrolled in a B.Ed program who intends to teach social studies in the province of Nova Scotia. In 2016, the name of the award was changed to the "Ken Langille Memorial Bursary" in honour of long time SSTA President and Conference Chair, Ken Langille who passed away in March 2016.
Criteria
The scholarship must be given to a student who has been accepted into the education program of a recognized school, where social studies is their primary teaching field. It does not apply to a student enrolled in a graduate program such as PhD, M.A., M.Ed.
The recipient of the scholarship must have attended school in Nova Scotia and intends to teach in this province.
The recipient of the scholarship must have a solid academic record, and have demonstrated an active involvement in the field of social studies.
The application must include a reference letter from a professor in the B.Ed program, curriculum vitae, applicant essay, and an unofficial transcript of marks, to be forwarded to the Awards Chair and the Executive will make the final decision.
There will be one scholarship of a maximum $500.00 awarded. The award will be made payable to both the recipient and the educational institution in which the individual is enrolled. The SSTA Awards Committee reserves the right to make awards and to adjust the number and values of awards annually.
The Awards Chair shall present a short list of candidates for selection by the executive of the SSTA.
The Committee reserves the right not to make the award in any given year.
Applications must be postmarked no later than May 1st, 2024.

Susan Aliphat Memorial Fellowship
for Nova Scotia teachers
About
The SSTA offers a fellowship to active members of the SSTA to encourage teachers to add to the delivery of the provincial Social Studies curriculum. This may take many forms: attendance at conferences, teacher-student educational tours, the development of educational packages, etc. Now called the "Susan Aliphat Memorial Fellowship", it honours the memory of Susan, a dedicated teacher and long time member of the SSTA who passed away in 2023. Her commitment to good History and Geography education, professional development, and her ability to bring learning alive to her students was a model for other teachers across the province.

Criteria
The following criteria will be used by Executive to select successful applicants:
All decisions are to be made by the Awards Chairperson in consultation with the Executive of the Social Studies Teachers Association.
Each award is not to exceed $600.00 but may be less. A maximum of $1200.00 may be granted each year.
More than one fellowship may be awarded in any one year.
Letters of application should be in the hands of the Executive prior to the teacher attending the function.
Letters of application should be in the hands of the executive by March 1st Fellowship winners will be announced in June.
Letters of application must include:
(a) description of the activity
(b) outline of the particulars
dates of the activity
estimated costs
destination, if applicable
The successful applicant must agree to attend in-services, at the request of the executive, in order to share new ideas, approaches, or the materials they have acquired.
Funds will be released to the successful applicant after he/she has provided the Executive with the appropriate receipts.
First time applicants will normally be given preference.
The executive will use the following priority list to judge the relative merits of each application.
Teachers attending national or international conferences or seminars.
Teacher-student groups attending conferences or seminars.
