Cara Brown Scholarship
$1,500 x 2
Deadline: Apr 30, 2025
The purpose of the Cara Brown ringette scholarship is to aid ringette athletes in defraying the costs associating with attending post-secondary education. Because of academic scholarships I received, I was able to pursue my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in economics and play ringette competitively without having to work part-time while in school. The 2021 article by Randy Pascal from The Sudbury Star kindly summarizes my 27-year ringette career. Along with those treasured ringette years, I have built a small business and found my life partner, Maureen, of more than 30 years.
The luxury of benefiting from a scholarship at a time when students need them the most cannot be underestimated. It assists the beneficiary to play ringette competitively while laying the foundation for home life and a career in the labour market. It opens up better options for young women than forcing them to choose when no choice is necessary.
It also gives me a chance to give back to the ringette community which has enriched my life so much. It would not have been possible if not for the parents (especially mine!), the coaches, referees, and many other volunteers who make the tournaments happen. And certainly it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable without the players I shared the ice with – some of the best ringette athletes in the world, and in Canada.
Application criteria:
Applications may be made by ringette players who meet all of the criteria below:
You are registered with one of Ringette Canada’s provincial/territorial member associations and are actively playing ringette at the AA level (or at the highest level offered in the applicant’s community) during the current playing season.
You are entering a Canadian university on a full-time basis for the first time in the next academic year.
You have achieved academic excellence (minimum B average or equivalent).
You have demonstrated a strong commitment to the sport of ringette.
Applicants must be planning to attend a university located in Canada and be able to meet the institution’s admission standards.

The Dartmouth NDP Community Service Award
$1,000
Deadline: May 30, 2025
The Dartmouth NDP Community Service Award (formerly the Percy Dares Memorial Prize) is now accepting applications. This award was established by the Percy Dares Memorial Prize Society over 25 years ago to promote the principles of community service and concern for one's fellow members of society.
The Dartmouth NDP Community Service Award recognizes a graduating student in each high school in the Dartmouth region with a cash prize of $1000. Assessment is based on community service. Applicants do not have to have plans to attend secondary education to be eligible. A transcript is also not required.
Applications for the $1000 award are open to graduating students from the following high schools:
Auburn Drive High
Cole Harbour High
Dartmouth High
École Secondaire Mosaïque
Island View High
Woodlawn High
The Dartmouth NDP Community Service Award is all about recognizing students who give their time and energy to building stronger communities. It celebrates volunteerism – the time you've spent helping out, the length of your commitment, and the kinds of things you’ve done with and for organizations that matter to you.
It’s also about the – what motivates you to show up, what you’ve learned through those experiences, and how that work has shaped you.
This award especially honours students who have volunteered in elections or with political campaigns at any level – municipal, provincial, or federal – as part of their commitment to civic engagement.
There are lots of awards and scholarships that recognize academic achievement, athletic excellence, or leadership in student government – and we encourage you to pursue those too, if they reflect your experience.
But this award is here to celebrate something different: your dedication to community, your passion for making a difference, and your belief in collective action.
Your application should include:
A 250 word letter about your volunteering experience.
A reference letter from a teacher, mentor, or someone you volunteer with/for, etc.
Your CV/resume
Apply Here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WSTXJMW
*We try to be as inclusive as possible in considering those who are making contributions to their communities, and we will endeavour to consider factors from your background and life experience.
If you identify as a member of a marginalized or equity-deserving community, we welcome you to include that as part of your story. If you’re planning to pursue post-secondary education – whether at a university, college, in the trades, through an apprenticeship, or another learning path – we’d love to hear about it. Feel free to share whether you’re the first in your family to have that opportunity, and anything else that feels important about your next steps, educational or otherwise.

The North Brewing Company Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship
$1500 x each year of post-secondary studies + Work Term
Deadline: July 31, 2023
At North, we recognize the need for better representation, diversity and inclusion within the craft beer and restaurant communities. We recognize that there are deep seeded systems and practices within our industry that result in a lack of representation and opportunity for so many people.
This annual scholarship will be awarded to a local candidate who is entering any of the following programs at a University or College within the HRM: hospitality, sciences, engineering, design, fabrication/trades, and any other field that is (or could be!) related to the brewing industry. The scholarship will be comprised of two parts: $1500 awarded to the successful candidate for each year of school attended in the program they are entering upon receipt of the scholarship (up to 4 years of schooling), plus guaranteed summer employment either in the taproom, retail or production, for the duration of their education.
Applications are open now, and will remain open until Oct. 31st. We will be awarding the first scholarship in late 2020 for the Winter 2021 term. We will announce yearly when we are open for applications and when they will be closed for the year. For eligibility details and to download an application form, go to: North Brewing Scholarship
