Monica MacNeil has spent more than 25 years building one of Canada's most vibrant high school music programs. She has turned a small, traditional band program into a dynamic, inclusive space where students develop musical skills, confidence and leadership.
Monica believes music is not just about performance. It's a way to help students find their voice, connect with others, and see new possibilities. Her classroom welcomes every student, no matter their experience or background, and helps them grow as musicians and as people.
Teaching approach
In Monica's classroom, students learn by creating and performing together. She blends traditional music education with modern approaches, including digital production and student-led learning.
Students help choose music and plan performances, taking ownership of their work. Monica also connects learning to local culture. Through courses in rock and traditional Celtic music, students explore their heritage while improving their skills.
In the classroom
Ensures all students can participate and succeed, whether they read music or learn by ear
Leads performances, coffee houses and music productions
Teaches digital music skills like recording, editing and sound production through hands-on projects
Creates opportunities for students to perform in a supportive and safe environment
Encourages teamwork by having students plan rehearsals, select music and lead ensembles
Integrates real-world learning through recording sessions and music competitions
Helps students take risks, develop resilience and gain confidence in their abilities
Builds an inclusive space where students of all skill levels can participate and grow
Outstanding achievements
Transformed the school's music program from fewer than 15 students to a thriving program with broad participation
Led students to a third-place finish in the 2025 CBC Music Class Challenge
Received the East Coast Music Association Stompin' Tom Award for long-term contributions to the music industry
Developed innovative courses in rock and traditional Celtic music that grew student participation
Mentored many students who went on to careers in music
Received national recognition through the Canadian Music Educators' Association Builder's Award
Built partnerships with community groups and cultural leaders to support student learning and find performance opportunities
