Tests and quizzes are no more than 50%; assignments and probes, no less than 50%.
Please Note:
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to catch up on any missed work. Check the class website, ask classmates for notes, and see the teacher to get any handouts. If you are absent the day on which an assignment is due, or a test, quiz, or probe is administered, the missed assessment will be completed the first day you return to class.
Course Overview
Mathematics 10 is a 220 hour (2 credits) math course. Students enrolled in this course will have a mathematics class every day in their Grade 10 year.
Mathematics 10 is an academic high school math course which is a pre-requisite for all other academic and advanced mathematics courses. This program is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs.
Two credits: one Math credit at grade 10 level and one “other” grade 10 credit towards NS Graduation requirements

ASSESSMENT
Exam: The provincial exam will be based on the entire year and is worth 20% of the final grade. The exam will be written in June.
Tests: Tests are major assessments and will be announced several days in advance. Expect one or two tests per unit. Tests may be cumulative throughout the year.
Quizzes: Quizzes provide opportunities to formally assess ongoing progress and give indications as to whether extra help is needed. Quizzes are generally short and will be announced in advance.
Assignments: Assignments may be in-class or take-home, individual or group effort, as indicated by your teacher. Students can use their notes/texts to complete these informal assessments. For take-home assignments, submissions will not be accepted after the corrected assignments have been handed back to students.
Homework Probes: Homework probes are unannounced short informal assessments based on recent work. Notes will be permitted for some homework probes but not for all. Students must be sure to keep up with their work on a daily basis and come in for extra help when needed.
Formative Assessments: These will be given on a regular basis to check to see that students understand the topics covered in class. These assessments will show up on Powerschool, but will NOT affect student’s mark.
Homework: Regular practice is essential for success in mathematics. Homework will be checked regularly; however, students are responsible to complete ALL assigned homework.
Note: Marks throughout the semester will adhere to these proportions:
Tests and Quizzes 50%
Assignments and Homework Probes 50%
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Expect to have homework every night.
If you are absent for a test, quiz or assignment, you are required to bring a written excuse from your parent/guardian upon your return to class. Failure to do so will result in a mark of zero (0) for the test, quiz, or assignment.
If you are absent for a test, you will be expected to write it the day you return to class.
If you are absent the day an assignment is due, it is due upon your return.
When you do miss class, it is your responsibility to get the work you missed. (All class notes, assignments and homework). Once you have done so, if you do not understand something, see me for extra-help.
DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET BEHIND. If you are having trouble, see me right away to set up a time for extra-help..
Graphing calculators will be provided for use during class and on tests. You should have access to a calculator at home for homework completion. You can use your own approved calculator in class and on assessments if you choose.
Communication of Student Achievement:
A collaborative effort of all stakeholders (student / parent/ teacher) is important to ensure student academic success. In an effort to maintain communications, a number of avenues are available.
Class Web sites are updated daily
Marks and attendance can be checked at any time on the Parent/ Student Portal of Powerschool. (If you do not have a password for the portal, please contact the main office)
The Auto-dialler calls home regarding unexcused absences and upcoming events.
Parents and students are encouraged to contact the teacher via email if they have any concerns regarding academic progress.
Formal reporting periods include:
Curriculum night
Progress Reports
Parent/teacher interviews
Creating a Positive Learning Environment:
To maximize the opportunities for success it is important:
ü To be on time and prepared with the necessary materials and text
ü To display proper classroom etiquette and participate in classroom activities
ü To complete all assigned homework
ü To continuously review covered materials in preparation for periodic probes and quizzes
ü To adequately prepare for all tests
ü To assume full responsibility for any or all missed class work or assessments
ü To attend offered or available extra help sessions when needed
Graphing calculators will be provided for use during class and on tests. If you have your own graphing calculator, you can use it for assessments provided it has been approved by your teacher.
Students must have their own calculator for use at home and on the NSE final examination (June).
