While we are learning from home, many of us have an increased opportunity to get involved in food preparation in our homes. However, we all have wildly different access to various foods and kitchen tools. All of the below activities have been designed in a way that you can adapt them to use whatever you have on hand. This is a great opportunity to be creative in the kitchen!
PLAN: Find one recipe that you want to make this week using ingredients that you have access to. You might want to check out any recipe books, or family recipes that you might have in your home. There are also lots of great recipes online. Need inspiration? Check out these recipes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0NvjcSq0MAnNpBAXAXM1kw/videos?app=desktop
MAKE: Take the lead on the recipe: gather the ingredients (doublecheck that you have the amounts needed), and follow the steps in preparing the ingredients and cooking/baking the foods. Make sure to get permission from an adult in your household before using kitchen equipment and appliances.
RECORD IT: Take a picture of your final product! Or draw a picture of how it turned out!
REFLECT: Write about your experience. Where did you find the recipe? Why did you choose it? What was it like to make it (were the instruction clear, did you have the right tools and/or skills)? How did it turn out? Would you make it again?
WRITE IT OUT: When you find a recipe that you like, copy it out and keep it in with other recipes in your home (or create a new recipe book/folder if your home doesn't already have one). Or, if you made a recipe from an existing book in your home, write* out any clarifications and/or adjustments that you would want to keep. *if you are using someone else's recipe book, be sure to ask them before you write in their book
SHARE IT (optional): Post your experience in the comments section below, send me an email, and/or share with your family and friends!
Food Preparation & Service 10, SCO 2.1 practice cooking techniques used with a variety of foods
Food Preparation & Service 10, SCO 3.1 apply Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating when meal planning
Food Preparation & Service 10, SCO 4.3 demonstrate their ability to prepare and serve food that is appetizing
Take a processed food and/or prepared meal (canned soup, frozen dinner, boxed pasta, etc.) and brainstorm changes that you can make to make it more:
nutritious
delicious
interesting
Write a simple list of ingredients and instructions for your new recipe.
Using ingredients that you have access to, try out preparing your new creation! Make sure you try tasting the finished product!
Record your observations:
How did the food turn out? How did it look? How did it taste?
Would you make it again? What changes would you make?
Write out a finalized recipe for your new creation. If you would like, share your experience with me in the comments section below, or by sending me an email.

As you are spending time in the kitchen, you might notice that there are some tools that you do not recognize, or perhaps that you find to be a bit strange! Take a picture of a utensil that you have learned how to use, and create a meme about it. Give your utensil a name, a persona, a new job, be creative!
To help you get started, I created my own woman-yelling-at-cat meme about one of the common debates in my Foods classes. đŸ˜‰
And you don't have to stop at utensils - there are lots of food technologies and appliances in kitchens that deserve their own memes.
I can't wait to see what you create!
Food Preparation & Service 10, SCO 2.2 Assess the use and economy of various appliances, tools, and convenience foods in food preparation
It's important to be safe in the kitchen! By this point we have completed a unit on Food Preparation Basics (SCOs 1.1-1.6) which taught you all about kitchen safety.
We generally know that we need to have long hair tied back, clean up spills right away, hold our knives the proper way, and that we of course need to wash our hands! Need a refresher? Check out the Government of Canada's site on kitchen safety: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/general-food-safety-tips/cooking-safety.html
Now it's your turn to take a creative spin with kitchen safety: create a meme! Make it on any aspect of kitchen or food safety. To help you get started I made one with Oprah to help spread my message. I'd love to see what you come up with!
Food Technology 10, SCO 1.2 Students will be expected to identify kitchen procedures reflective of maintaining a safe workplace
