UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations is an explicit and systematic phonics program designed to teach foundational reading skills, especially for students in kindergarten through second grade, and for intervention with struggling readers at any grade level. In our class, it is used in conjunction with a variety of other approaches to support different types of learners on their path to becoming independent readers and writers.
In our class monthly and weekly calendars, it is specified which UFLI concepts are being covered in class during that week/month. Calendars are sent home each week/month in your child's blue communication folder.

Instructions for Families
The alphabet tracing book, completed nightly, will support your child in learning letters and sounds, along with a reference word.
Procedure:
Use your index finger and the child’s finger for the initial instruction
Model appropriate letter formation verbalizing the pathway
Use hand over hand (if necessary) to guide an individual learner.
Have the learner model the formation and state the verbal pathway
Gradually, expect independence.
Name the letter (g, G)
Articulate the sound(s) /g/
Match/Say the picture(s) “goat”
Have the learner complete/repeat after your demonstration
Continue until all letters are automatically known and linked to sound and picture.
