Dear Grade 5 Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the Grade 6 band registration site. Click the button above to access the online registration form.
Grade 6 band is a unique opportunity for students to learn many valuable life skills, such as discipline, commitment, teamwork, overcoming challenges, and the value of hard work. While (as with any activity), some students will find they have a natural aptitude for band, the curriculum is designed so that any student who puts in the effort, no matter their level of musical talent, can succeed. Everybody can do band!
Grade 6 band involves 8 main instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium or tuba, and percussion. Other instruments like oboe and French horn are also possible. The "Description of Instruments" page describes each of these instruments in more detail, along with some of the challenges and rewards. While the school does have a small supply of these instruments for students, they are easy to rent from Long and McQuade—most instruments cost less than $30 a month and are in good repair and of good quality. If this cost is a barrier for your family, we do have instruments at school which can be assigned to students for the year. In addition to their instrument, students will also need a cleaning kit, reeds or oil depending on the instrument, a pencil, and a hard-cover binder.
The exact schedule for next year is currently in flux, so more information will come out as the schedules are finalized. Other than a few performance opportunities throughout the year, however, none of Grade 6 band takes place outside of normal school hours.
