Language Arts:
Speaking and Listening - These outcomes will be covered in all areas of the curriculum.
- Active listening skills
- Ask and respond to questions
- Share personal experiences, ideas, feelings …
- Small and whole group discussions
Reading and Viewing - Read alouds, Partner and Independent reading.
- Choosing Just Right Books ( read most words, retell the story and fluent - read like you talk) during Reader’s Workshop.
- Comprehension (retell story, questions, make connections and predictions).
- Respond personally (like / not like ) and critically (opinion).
- Letter and word work - individually (letters, sounds, sight words) and able to recognize in a variety of print (books, chants, wordwall, names).
Writing and Other Ways of Representing
- Shared and Independent Writing during Writer’s Workshop
- Create pictures and words to tell a story.
- Use Invented ( hear and record sounds in an unknown word) and Accurate spelling.
- Practice writing various genres (personal stories, poetry, non-fiction, cards…)
Assessment
Outcomes are assessed daily through observations (use strategies independently), work samples, teacher/student conferences and reading records.

Unit 2 - Patterning and Geometry - 3 weeks
Unit 3 - Numbers to 20 and counting to 100 - 4 weeks
Unit 4 - Measurement - Length and Area - 2 weeks
Unit 5 - Introduction to Addition and Subtracting - 4 weeks
Unit 6 - Geometry and Patterning - 2 weeks
Unit 7 - Addition and Subtraction of Numbers to 20 - 4 weeks
Unit 8 - Measurement - Mass - 2 weeks
Unit 9 - Measurement - Volume and Capacity - 2 weeks
Unit 10 - Addition, Subtraction and Flexibility of Numbers to 20 - 4 weeks
Unit 11 - Geometry - 3 weeks
Unit 12 - Patterning - 3 weeks
The following is a yearly plan which is divided into 12 units. This allows students to revisit outcomes previously taught. Students begin class having daily mental math (solve in their heads) and number routines (counting from 1to 20 and backwards from 10 to 1). Students solve problems using manipulatives (counters), record and share their thinking.
Assessment
Students are assessed by participation in solving and sharing their thinking, work samples, notes taken from observations and unit assessments on number sense created by our board.
Science, Health and Social Studies:
These outcomes are integrated in Math and Language Arts throughout the year through chants, read alouds, morning circle topics, measurement, counting and much more.
