Mathematics Essentials 10 is an introductory high school mathematics course designed for students who may consider entering post-secondary programs that do not have any mathematics prerequisites or who are not planning to pursue post-secondary study but going directly to work. Mathematics Essentials courses are designed to provide students with the development of the skills and understandings required in the workplace, as well as those required for everyday life at home and in the community.
Topics: In Math Essentials 10, students will be introduced to mental math, earning & purchasing, measurement, transportation and probability.
Assessment: The student’s final grade will be comprised of the following
Tests (25%) – Students will write 2 major tests (including the final exam).
Quizzes (25%) – Students will write a short quiz at the end of each chapter for a total of 5 quizzes.
Projects (20%) – Students will complete a project at the end of each unit for a total of 4 projects.
Assignments (30%) – Students will be asked to complete assignments in class and at home throughout the semester.
Expectations:
Be on Time! Students are expected to be in their seats before the bell rings and remain in their seats until the bell at the end of class.
Be Prepared! Students should arrive in class with paper, pencil, eraser and calculator.
Be Responsible! Students are responsible to catch up on work missed when not in class or reschedule missed tests or quizzes.
Be Respectful! Students are expected to be kind and respectful to their teacher, classmates and learning environment.
Be Present! Cell phones are a serious distraction and are not permitted unless special permission is given by the teacher.
Website: This site contains a calendar outlining upcoming tests, quizzes and assignments as well as links that might support you in your studies.
Google Classroom: The classroom contains copies of all notes and handouts given in class as well as important upcoming dates (tests, quizzes, assignments etc). Videos that support learning can also be found on the classroom. Students should be using the website to catch up on missed work when absent.
