READING STRATEGIES
Adjust the language not the concept
Encourage student to discuss what they’ve read
Highlight key vocabulary in handouts
Give readings in advance
Highlight main ideas of readings before or after reading
Review possible unfamiliar vocabulary
Encourage student to use text features to aid with comprehension
Use visuals to reinforce new vocabulary
Install Immersive Reader to device to support reading and comprehension of websites (see how-to video)
Allow students to read in their first language - let family know that Halifax Public Library has a growing selection of books in different languages - also refer to the EAL section of Spectacle Lake library
Translate Google Docs via Tool section (see how-to video )
Access google search engines in students’ home language
Install Google Translate extension on Google Chrome - translate entire pages and websites
WRITING STRATEGIES
Provide format for writing or use graphic organizer
Provide more time for student to complete assignments
Provide plenty of reinforcement on vocabulary/concepts
Provide writing models and examples of projects and assignments so student is aware of expectations
Provide samples of writing or writing models
Review verb endings and the time elements of verbs
Allow student to write in first language and translate to English
The meanings of some words are lost in translation when translated to English; allow student to use the word in their language to maintain meaning (they can provide on oral explanation)
Encourage student to write about topics they know well
Encourage student to write about what they read with detail-using new vocabulary
Incorporate the use of technology to support the writing process
LISTENING STRATEGIES
Allow sufficient wait time to process what you are asking
Ask a specific question; avoid asking ‘do you understand?’
Speak clearly, use gestures and visuals
Be mindful of idioms; provide literal explanations
Break down instructions into smaller parts
Provide examples and models to support instructions
Encourage student to self-advocate/ask questions when they require clarification
Supply text during read alouds
Use clear language at an age-appropriate level for the learner
Clarify main ideas and key prior to introducing new materials ie. Videos
Use translation as required
Visuals to support comprehension
Use translated subtitles when viewing videos
SPEAKING STRATEGIES
Be mindful to explain idioms when used in context
Create conducive learning opportunities for students to participate fully in classroom activities
Use words banks/word walls when introducing new materials
Recycle newly introduced vocabulary in varying contexts
Ask tiered questions to support high-order thinking skills
Give time to respond
Check for comprehension by asking student to repeat instructions
Prepositions can be tricky so check for comprehension by asking a specific question
Provide opportunities for student to talk with peers
