Include visuals and other languages where possible - poems, morning messages, anchor charts etc.
When practicing letter sounds, provide the English word and have student provide the word in their language. Model how to identify letter sounds in a word. Have them phonetically spell the word in their language first and then the English word.
Use of dual language labels has a strong impact on making vocabulary meaningful.

Allow students to read in their first language. EAL library at Spectacle Lake has a growing collection of dual language books. Halifax Public Libraries also has a section of multilingual titles - you may want to share this link with parents.
