Coaches fall within the broad category of Learning Support Teachers within the Nova Scotia Inclusive Education policy. Their role is to provide direct and collaborative support to students, teachers and administrators. The goal of coaching is to improve student learning and engagement by enhancing teaching practice through job-embedded professional learning. The Halifax Regional Centre for Education follows a student-centered model of coaching. The core practices of this model are:
"The impact of coaching is monitored based on teacher and student learning" (Sweeney & Mausbach, 2018). School and system leaders have a shared responsibility to ensure coaching is having the intended impact on teaching and learning. Our collective capacity and efforts will lead to improved teacher practice and increased student achievement. Teachers, coaches, school administrators and literacy / mathematics consultants each have roles and responsibilities to ensure we achieve our goals.
