Math Routines to Start Class With
Daily 30 Online Mental Math Practice from Brainbashers - Easy, medium and hard options. Try to complete the mental math computations in 30 seconds or less.
Math Talks from How We Teach - A selection of math discussion prompts to start class with.
Which One Doesn't Belong? - In this routine students are asked to look at all four images and asked to share their reasoning as to "Which One Doesn't Belong and Why?" The great thing about this routine is that there are no wrong answers, as long as the student's reasoning is true. The focus is not on the answer, but on the student being able to communicate his/her reasoning/justification of their choice.
Same or Different? - Same or Different? is a routine that provides students opportunities to construct arguments when comparing objects, such as numbers or shapes.
Would You Rather Math - Each prompt describes two options. Students are asked to choose one of those options and justify their choice with mathematics.
Mid-Course Cumulative Review Activities (Units 1 - 4)
Student Self Assessment and Extra Practice: English, French - *** Updated Feb. 2024*** In addition to teacher feedback, providing students the opportunity to reflect on their own learning is an important step in becoming independent and taking ownership over their own learning. This self-assessment can be either posted to a Google classroom or printed for student use.
Scavenger Hunt Circuit: English, French - *** Updated Feb. 2024*** This resource is a 12 station mixed practice review for a whole class activity. Students can work in small groups around the room where a correct answer directs them to the next station. A tracking sheet is also provided so students can work out their answers.
Mid-Course Cumulative Assessment (Units 1 - 4) *** Updated Mar. 2024*** English, French (Answer Key) This assessment is being provided to support Mathematics 8 teachers in assessing student understanding at this point in their learning. The assessment is a mixed format that consists of 25 multiple choice questions that mirror the M8 assessment which includes knowledge, application, and analysis questions. This assessment is intended to be a follow up to the Mid-Course Cumulative Review Self Assessment and the Whole Class Scavenger Hunt Circuit identified above.
This assessment should be printed in hard copy for student use as it provides space for students to complete their work. Following the students completing the assessment, there are three options for correcting the assessment and consolidating the data.
Once answers have been completed and collected (three options are below), teachers can use this document to analyze student responses to help identify whole class trends where concepts may need to be revisited. The findings can also help identify where individual students might have been successful or need additional support. Through discussions within your school, plans can be made to address trends that arise during this work.
Options for Correcting Assessment:
Pencil and Paper: The teacher can either print a copy of this Google sheet or make a copy of the Google sheet in their Drive to consolidate the information per student and per question.
Google Form: Once the students complete the assessment, they are asked to complete a Google Form (The link takes you to a shared folder, you can make a copy of the Google Form from there) found in their Google classroom. Each question on the Google form will correspond to the same question on the assessment. Once the Google forms are submitted, teachers can follow the directions provided to help consolidate the data in a Google sheet.
ZipGrade: Once the students complete the assessment, they are asked to complete a bubble sheet that teachers can quickly scan into the ZipGrade app. The instructions on how to use ZipGrade will walk teachers through the process, including how to interpret the results.
