Additional Resources and Activities for N07 (operations with integers):
HRCE Rubric for 8N07 - This rubric can be used for a variety of purposes such as a resource to create learning goals, a tool for student self assessment and on-going, formative assessment, creating report card comments, summative assessment of achievement, and/or as a support in giving descriptive feedback to students.
Online math tools: Grids, dot grids, expression mats, algebra tiles, base 10 blocks, number lines,
Missing Multipliers - A multiplication square with 4 rows and 4 columns has had all its headings and answers hidden. All of the headings are numbers between 2 and 12, and no heading appears twice horizontally or vertically. By revealing some of the answers, can you work out what the headings must be?
Multiply Integers with a Number Line Desmos Activity - This is an online Desmos Classroom Activity that offers students a visual and conceptual introduction to multiplication of positive and negative numbers
Integer Bingo - Students create their own 4x4 bingo card using random numbers between -8 and 8. The teacher randomly selects two integers between -4 and +4. Students add these numbers together and if the sum is on their card, they can cross it off. The first student to cross off all of the numbers on their card calls “bingo!” and wins.
Integer War Card Game - Each player draws three cards from a deck of playing cards and create an expression with one addition and one multiplication where they will result in the largest value (__) + (___) x (___) = ? Black cards are positive and red cards are negative and aces are 1. You can remove face cards, let them all be 10 or come up with a special rule for them (like a face card lets you draw an extra card so you get 4 total cards and can choose 3 of the 4 to put in the equation).
Calculations with Integers - Students create their own integer expressions which evaluate to a specific number. A great way to quickly assess how well students have understood a topic. From Gary Lamb.
Yohaku Puzzle from yohaku.ca - A harder #yohaku than it looks? Your task is to fill in the empty cells such that they give the product shown in each row and column. In this puzzle, there is an added constraint, the sum of the integers in the 4 shaded cells is 3
24 Game - This game can be played with an ordinary deck of playing cards with all the face cards removed. The aces are taken to have the value 1 and the basic game proceeds by having 4 cards thrown and the first player that can achieve the number 24 exactly using only allowed operations (such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses) wins the hand
Modelling multiplication of integers using counters: English, French: A slide show demonstrating how to model the multiplication of integers using two-sided counters.
Modelling multiplication of integers using counters: English, French: A scaffolded recording sheet to support students' thinking as they model multiplication. The objective of this activity is to support students as they explore and help them make their own generalizations about multiplying integers.
