N05.11 Solve a given problem involving the addition or subtraction of positive fractions or mixed numbers, and determine if the solution is reasonable.

Additional Resources and Activities for N05 (adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers):
HRCE Marking Rubric for 7N05 - This rubric can be used for a variety of purposes such as a resource to create learning goals, a tool for student self assessment and on-going, formative assessment, creating report card comments, summative assessment of achievement, and/or as a support in giving descriptive feedback to students.
Fraction Addition and Subtraction *Updated December 2024* Google Slides (As Jamboard is no longer available, the following have been created for use with technology, or to be printed as hard copy for each student)
Estimation 180 Fractions - Show the image to students as a class warm-up. Ask them to use visual clues to estimate where would the cylinder be ⅓ full.
Fraction Pyramids - English, French This Google slides contains fraction addition pyramids. Each block in the pyramid should contain the sum of the two blocks below it. Given starting values, students are tasked to complete the pyramid.
Adding Fractions Math Menu :English, French In this activity, students are given 8 constraints to try to match when creating addition of fractions questions. Their job is to try to create enough questions to satisfy all 8 constraints collectively. You can also try this in a Desmos Adding Fractions Menu Math Activity.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators Part 1 and Part 2 - A series of fraction addition questions presented visually. These questions were created with https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/fractions/ .
Fraction Addition Scavenger Hunt - This scavenger hunt contains 12 fraction addition questions. The solution to each question leads students to the next question in the loop. Once students have completed the loop of 12 questions, they are finished.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions Review/Practice Activity Grid - A grid of 4 different activities for students to choose from. Links to both English and French Activities included on the slide.
Fraction Magic Squares from Don Steward - In a magic square, each row, column and diagonal sum to the same value. These magic squares use fractions. This activity is hosted on Don Steward's website.
Fraction Fill-In game - Students take turns colouring in parts of a fraction wall given the results of the roll of dice. The first student to colour in their whole board wins.
Fraction Flags - Ask students to create their own flags by decomposing a rectangle into at least 8 sections using straight lines. Colour these sections using four different colours. Calculate what fraction of the whole flag is represented by each colour.
The Fraction Challenge Desmos activity English, French - In this activity, students will practice adding and subtracting fractions. They will create expressions to match given criteria (e.g., the greatest value, the least positive value, etc.). Students will reason abstractly and structurally, arguing that their expressions are the greatest or least possible.
Half is in the Middle from Don Steward - Students are presented with number lines with the number 1/2 in the middle. Students then use another number on the number line to determine the value of the missing number. A google slides of these questions.
Pixel Art: English, French: A self-checking activity for students to practice adding and subtracting fractions.
The Kentucky Center for Mathematics has Fraction Talks prompts and resources for use.
Unit 5 Cumulative Review
Adding Fractions Review Questions from Miss Konstantine - Students have a variety of type and difficulty of fraction addition questions on one Google slide.
Add 'Em Up Activity - Fraction Addition and Subtraction - Students work in small groups (typically four students) to solve a set of problems. Students add up their solutions to the four problems to see if this sum matches the sum at the center of the sheet. If the numbers match then they have all four questions correct. If not, they work together to find their mistake(s). For more information on Add 'Em Up activities, check out Sara VanDerWerf's post.
Fraction Operations Scavenger Hunt - This scavenger hunt contains 12 fraction addition and subtraction questions (both proper fractions and mixed numbers). There are also several word problems. The solution to each question leads students to the next question in the loop. Once students have completed the loop of 12 questions, they are finished.
