Mathigon Polypad - Polypad is a collection of free virtual manipulatives including algebra tiles which students can use to model the multiplication of polynomials. The Mathigon 101 webinar for secondary teachers demonstrates a number of available features.
EAL Support - Desmos offers a free suite of math software tools, including the Desmos Graphing Calculator and Scientific Calculator, as well as free digital classroom activities. Click on the globe in the tool bar to access the site in other languages.
M04 Students will be expected to develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that involve right triangles. [C, CN, PS, R, T, V]
M04.01 Explain the relationships between similar right triangles and the definitions of the primary trigonometric ratios.
M04.02 Identify the hypotenuse of a right triangle and the opposite and adjacent sides for a given acute angle in the triangle.
M04.03 Solve right triangles, with or without technology.
M04.04 Solve a problem that involves one or more right triangles by applying the primary trigonometric ratios or the Pythagorean theorem.
M04.05 Solve a problem that involves indirect and direct measurement, using the trigonometric ratios, the Pythagorean theorem, and measurement instruments such as a clinometer or metre stick.
Additional Resources and Activities for M04 (sine, cosine and tangent):
Guess the Height of a Lamp Pole - Students use estimation and similar triangles to try to determine the height of a lamp pole from a photo. This is a link to a Mimio file for this activity. From Dan Meyer
Introducing Trig Through Slope - An introductory lesson on trigonometric ratios using the slope of right triangles.
Desmos Activity: Development of Trigonometry Ratios - Development of the Sine, Cosine, and Tangent ratios by looking at similar triangles. This activity leads into the development of the Trigonometric Table and introduces its use in solving for unknown angles in right triangles. What separates this activity from other trigonometry problems is that measurements aren't just laid out for students to plug into a formula, and so problems have an extra layer of choice.
Finding Angles - Right Angled Trig - A pdf handout from Josh Martin that asks students to match a number of trig ratio equations with their corresponding angle from a selection of right triangle images.
Tangent Ratio Secret Message - Students use the tangent ratio to solve 6 problems. The solutions let students create a keyword that can be used to decode a message made with a Vigenère cipher.
Desmos Activity: Identifying opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse and finding trig ratios - Repeated practice to identify sides in a right triangle, and to identify sin, cos, tan ratios.
Desmos Activity: Right Angle Trigonometry - Students explore sine, cosine, & tangent to find missing sides of right triangles.
Desmos Activity: Trigonometry Target Practice - This activity allows students unlimited practice calculating the hypotenuse length using sine and cosine
How High is the Ceiling? - Given a photo, ask students to brainstorm what measurements they would need to find the height of the tall object such as the ceiling in the classroom.
Have students get into small groups and make a clinometer from classroom materials and then measure and calculate using trigonometry the heights of several objects. Recording sheet. Amy Gruen describes how this activity went in here classroom. Thaddeus Wert also did a similar activity outdoors to measure the height of the school's library.
SSDD Problems - SSDD stands for "Same Surface, Different Deep Structure". It is a math routine giving students four similar looking problems that require different strategies to solve. Here are a few for sine, cosine and tangent: Jim's Ladder, Four Right Angled Triangles, and Gaz's Triangle.
Desmos Activity: Practical Trigonometry Problem Solving - Armed with a clinometer and a tape measure, students are required to solve a series of trigonometry problems.
Trigonometry Practice - This is a series of Google slides with sets of practice questions. Questions could be projected with an LCD projector for the whole class or printed off for students to work on (or both). From https://mathshko.com/2018/09/10/trigonometry/.
Trigonometry Pile-Up! - This resource is a challenging puzzle to consolidate learning on trigonometry. The idea is that pupils have to start with the information they have in the bottom triangle and work their way up through the stack, finding missing side lengths to allow them to calculate the length of the hypotenuse of the top triangle. From William Emeny at Great Maths Teaching Ideas .
Unit 4 Review
Trig Review with Knowledgehook: *Added February 2025* Students self-assess with "I can" statements, then are directed to Knowledgehook questions to test their skills.
