Math Essentials 12 Desmos Activity Collection - A collection of online student Desmos activities organized by unit.
2.1 investigate a range of career opportunities to determine the best possible fit for their interests within the trades
2.2 demonstrate to others what type of mathematical knowledge is required to be successful at various career choices
2.3 demonstrate entry-level competence in the mathematics associated with the specific career choice a student has made
2.4 sketch and construct a model that will enable a student to show others some mathematics involved in a career interest
Additional Resources and Activities for 2.1 (career opportunities):
Use a job search website (such as Indeed) to investigate job openings in your area. Identify three jobs that you find interesting. For each of these jobs, briefly describe the job and record the salary, job type (full time, part time, seasonal, etc), qualifications, and benefits. What would you need to do to apply to these jobs?
Investigate a variety of career opportunities - Investigate possible careers at the Govt of Canada website. Which careers are of interest to you. Which could you train for at a University, NSCC or trade college? What would the requirements to enter this career be?
Additional Resources and Activities for 2.2 (mathematical knowledge in careers):
Draw a Circle with a Framing Square - A carpenter might use a framing square to lay out a small circle or part of a circle. Tack two nails to set the diameter you want, then rotate a framing square against the nails while you hold a pencil in the corner of the square. Watch a video of this technique. This works because Thales' Theorem.
Additional Resources and Activities for 2.3 (job site math):
Think about the income you earn from a selected job or career. Is it enough for a "living wage?" What is a living wage in Nova Scotia.
Cost of Living CBC Article - This article states that the Sep2022 cost of living wage in Halifax is $23.50. What would a household budget look like at that wage?
Additional Resources and Activities for 2.4 (sketch and construct a model):
This outcome might be better placed in Unit 3.
