Math at Work 10 Desmos Activity Collection - A collection of online student Desmos activities organized by unit.
G02 Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the Pythagorean theorem by identifying situations that involve right triangles, verifying the formula, applying the formula, and solving problems. [C, CN, PS, V]
G02.01 Explain, using illustrations, why the Pythagorean theorem applies only to right triangles.
G02.02 Verify the Pythagorean theorem, using examples and counterexamples, including drawings, concrete materials, and technology.
G02.03 Describe historical and contemporary applications of the Pythagorean theorem.
G02.04 Determine if a given triangle is a right triangle, using the Pythagorean theorem.
G02.05 Explain why a triangle with the side length ratio of 3:4:5 is a right triangle.
G02.06 Explain how the ratio of 3:4:5 can be used to determine if a corner of a given 3-D object is square (90°) or if a given parallelogram is a rectangle.
G02.07 Solve a problem using the Pythagorean theorem.
Additional Resources and Activities for G02 (Pythagorean Theorem):
Pythagorean Theorem Water Demo video - A video demonstrating the Pythagorean Theorem using water.
Tilted Squares from NRICH Math - It's easy to work out the areas of squares drawn on a grid if they are oriented in the usual way. Can you find a quick and easy method to work out the areas of tilted squares? How many different sized squares could you create using a geoboard?
Taco Truck Desmos Activity in English and French - In this activity, students use the Pythagorean theorem as a tool to solve problems involving diagonal distances. In a quick prelude, students reason with the Pythagorean theorem and with rates in a situation that they may encounter in their daily lives: taking a shortcut to save time. Students then determine the best path to a taco truck from a spot on the beach. The activity culminates in a class-wide race!
Spiral of Theodorus Art Project - The spiral begins with an isosceles right triangle and continues by keeping one leg length the same and using the hypotenuse of the previous triangle to make the other leg of the next triangle. Students used Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the hypotenuse length for each triangle and expressed their answer either as a decimal or a simplified radical.
Pythagorean Theorem Crack the Code activity - Students solve 15 Pythagorean Theorem problems. They add up all the answers to get a 3 digit code. They check this code with the teacher to see if they have all the right answers. If not, they work to find their mistake. Answers From Dr. Austin Maths.
Origami Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem video from Vi Hart - Vi demonstrates how to fold a piece of square paper to prove the Pythagorean theorem.
Watson Save from Yummy Math - In the 2005 AFC divisional football championship game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos, Benjamin Watson stopped a touchdown in the last instant. He did this by running diagonally across the entire football field. Watch the video to see the play and listen to the commentary.
TV Space Task - Will Mr. Piccini's new 40" LCD HD TV fit in the space he has available on the wall? You'll need to know about Pythagorean Theorem and the height to width ratio of an HD TV to find out.
Squares, Area & The Pythagorean Theorem - An activity to find a square with vertices on the coordinate grid whose area is n square units or show that there is no such square. This activity is based on the Squares on a Coordinate Grid problem from Illustrative Mathematics.
Unit 4 Cumulative Review
Pythagorean Theorem (G02) Quizizz - Quizizz is an online formative assessment tool that can be used to easily create and share formative assessments.
Pythagorean Theorem Review Questions- Students can select problems from three different levels of difficulty.
Legend of Zelda Pythagorean Theorem Desmos Activity - In this activity students will apply Pythagorean Theorem to help Link defeat Ganon and save Zelda.
