Math at Work 10 Pacing Guide - This pacing guide replaces the previous yearly plan. It has been updated to reflect removed outcomes and provide flexibility for responsive instruction.
Math at Work 10 - 12 and related Math 7 - 9 Outcomes *Updated May 2024*
Math at Work 10 Desmos Activity Collection - A collection of online student Desmos activities organized by unit.
N01 Students will be expected to solve problems that involve unit pricing and currency exchange, using proportional reasoning. [CN, ME, PS, R]
N01.01 Compare the unit price of two or more given items.
N01.02 Solve problems that involve determining the best buy, and explain the choice in terms of the cost as well as other factors, such as quality and quantity.
N01.03 Compare, using examples, different sales promotion techniques.
N01.04 Determine the percent increase or decrease for a given original and new price.
N01.05 Solve, using proportional reasoning, a contextual problem that involves currency exchange.
N01.06 Explain the difference between the selling rate and purchasing rate for currency exchange.
N01.07 Explain how to estimate the cost of items in Canadian currency while in a foreign country, and explain why this may be important.
N01.08 Convert between Canadian currency and foreign currencies, using formulas, charts, or tables.
Additional Resources and Activities for N01 (Unit Price and Currency Exchange):
Unit Price - Unit price, best buy and sale/discount price
Click Battle Desmos Activity - In this proportional reasoning activity, students will explore unit rate in the Click Battle arena.
The Better Deal Desmos Activity - Students will use their understanding of unit rate in several contexts (words, tables, and graphs) to determine which item is a better deal.
Big Bucks from Yummy Math - In this activity, with a twist on unit rate, students find the average pay per year or "unit rate of pay" for a collection of highly paid athletes. Students think about unit rate, proportionality, slope and the relationship between multiplication and division.
Which Liquid is the Most Expensive? - Students rank a number of liquids from most expensive to least expensive. They then calculate the unit price of each to confirm their ranking. Students can then investigate the unit price of other liquids.
Is Lego Gender Biased? from Jon Orr - How does Lego price it’s kits? Is the price per piece of a Lego Star Wars set the same as the price per piece of a Lego Friends set? Find out with this activity.
Currency Exchange - Currency exchange, selling rate and purchasing rate
Foreign Currency and Foreign Exchange - An interactive classroom activity that demonstrates how exchange rates change and how to exchange currency. Includes a handout and video of a classroom doing the activity. A similar activity is found at the www.imf.org website.
Going on a trip currency exchange practice sheet - Students need to exchange currency several times on an imaginary trip around the world.
Currency Exchange Draft Activity - A collection of low value international currency can be used for this activity. Each small group of students is given a stack of currency from a variety of countries around the world. Students take turns selecting one of the bills until they have all been 'drafted'. Then students identify the country that the bill is from and find out its value in Canadian dollars. Students then add up their total value and see which students has drafted the highest value. Class warm-up questions, Student recording sheet, currency exchange table.
Would You Rather? - Would you rather have 3500 Mexican Pesos or 210 Euros? Whatever your answer is, please provide justification.
SSDD Problems - SSDD stands for "Same Surface, Different Deep Structure". It is a math routine giving students four similar looking problems that require different strategies to solve. Here are a few for unit price and currency exchange: Canadian Dollars, The Washing Powder and The Hat.
