Desmos online Graphing Calculator. (EAL Support - Click on the globe in the tool bar to access the site in other languages)
RF02 - Students will not be expected to generate a quadratic from data or a situation where the vertex or x-intercepts are not evident (Click here to see which questions are in the Foundations of Mathematics 11 Textbook do not need to be covered as part of Mathematics 11/ Extended Mathematics 11 Curriculum).
Additional Resources and Activities for RF02 (Quadratics):
Desmos Activity: The Coefficient of a Quadratic Function - In this activity, students explore how the coefficients of a quadratic function in Standard Form affect the graph.
Desmos Activity: Quazy about Quadratics - Basic Quadratics review of Axis of Symmetry, Vertex, y-intercepts, and x-intercepts.
Algebraic Yahaku Puzzles - Fill in the empty cells such that they give the sum or product shown in each row and column.
Vertex Form Investigation - An activity shared by EECD to support students in learning about vertex form of a quadratic function for outcome RF02.
Expanding and Factoring Quadratics Fill in the Blanks - A review of factoring quadratic expressions from Dr. Austin Maths. Solutions.
Two Truths and One Lie - Students worked in pairs as a team to develop the two truths and one lie about a quadratic function given some rules. After writing their statements on a sticky note they traded stickies with another group and identified which statements were true and which was the lie.
Down the Drain - Drain the water from a hole in the bottom of a water bottle to investigate two different quadratic relationships: the shape of the stream of water and the rate the water level falls.
Desmos Activity: Super Mario Quadratics - In this activity, students will construct various quadratics to collect coins and stars in a series of Super Mario levels. Students begin by modifying quadratics in Vertex form and Factored form before constructing their own quadratics to move through progressively more difficult levels.
Desmos Activity: Two Truths a One Lie: Parabolas - Students will practice their understanding of the features and vocabulary of a parabola by creating a parabola, writing two true and one false statement about it, and inviting their peers to separate truth from lies
Quadratic Equations Open - Middle - *Added March 2025* (From: How I Teach Maths Blog by John Rowe). Use the values 0 - 9 to create three equivalent quadratic functions, in different forms.
Desmos Activity: Ping Pong Catapults - Students explore characteristics of the graph of a quadratic function, and practice writing (and using ) and equation in Vertex Form or Standard Form.
Desmos Activity: Polygraph: Parabolas - This is a great online activity for a class to try out. One student selects a parabola. Another student tries to guess which parabola was chosen by asking yes/no questions. Student practice mathematical communication in this activity.
Angry Birds - Parabolas - Given different parabolic flight paths do the angry birds hit the pigs?
Desmos Activity: Marbleslides: Parabolas - In this delightful and challenging activity, students will transform parabolas so that the marbles go through the stars. Students will test their ideas by launching the marbles and will have a chance to revise before trying the next challenge.
Desmos Activity: Card Sort - In this activity, students will find the shape of a parabola by using its form to reveal its characteristics. The activity begins with a review of both the characteristics and forms of a parabola. Later, students will determine characteristics of the graph of a parabola given in standard form, vertex form, or intercept form.
Unit 2 Cumulative Review
Desmos Activity: Quadratic Functions Summary - A self-checking review for students to see if they understand the characteristics of quadratic functions, including vertex, intercepts, domain and range, and axis of symmetry.
