The elementary string program offers classes to students in grades 4, 5 and 6. Students start in Grade 4 and learn solid foundational knowledge of the violin, viola, or cello. Students participate in two group lessons each week. These lessons take place at either their school, or if they do not have a string program at their school, at an after school/early evening program offered at sites in Dartmouth, Fall River, Cole Harbour, and Clayton Park. They perform in their local school concerts and/or at regional concerts. The grade six students participate in three orchestra workshop days where they experience playing in an orchestra and get the chance to try the viola and bass.
What is the cost for this program? The program is offered free of charge and students borrow instruments at no cost.
The string program continues into Junior High and Senior High School. At these levels students receive one lesson on their instrument each week and one ensemble rehearsal each week. Students in Junior and Senior High receive group lessons outside of school time, such as before or after school.
Students at the Junior and Senior High String Program have the opportunity to play in HRA ensembles, such as FiddleFax, Honour Violin, Junior Chamber Orchestra, and HRA Symphony Orchestra. Some of these ensembles are auditioned groups.
