HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Gaspereau Valley Elementary School is located in the beautiful Gaspereau Valley, an area known for its fragrant apple orchards, vineyards and tubing on the Gaspereau River. Gaspereau is a rural farming and fishing community with many well established farms, older homes and some newer homes. The school officially opened November 16, 1965 to serve the school sections of Forest Hill, Davison Street, Greenfield, White Rock, Ridge Road, Gaspereau, Melanson, Melanson Mountain, Wallbrook Mountain, Newtonville and Black River Lake. It was designed to accommodate 490 students. It opened with a population of 372 students and 14 teachers. Mr. B. Reginald Harrison was the first principal and Kathleen Thomas was the first secretary.
Changes over the years, with community support, include the building of tennis courts and creation of a soccer field. In the mid-eighties an addition was built to the Multi-purpose room to serve as a Phys. Ed. Office and storage room.
The school population has been fortunate to have the continued support of a strong and supportive Home and School Association. This association has contributed to many of the programs and initiatives that are currently in place.
Daily Physical Education has been in place for many years and continues to date.
Renovations, in the past, include new windows, new roof, playground improvements, a new gymnasium, and upgrading. The parking area and bus loop were improved in the summer of 2005. It now offers a safe and user friendly drop off area for the students and staff. It also enhances the look of the school. Renovations of the rest of our school were completed in 2010 and included a new office and renovated classrooms with enhanced technology.
