~Language Arts~

Reading and Viewing: Partner, shared, guided and independent reading, read aloud, book clubs/Reading groups, an awareness of literature styles, reading responses, an awareness of effective reading skills


Writing and Other Ways of representing: Create written text in a variety of forms (i.e. journals, letters, poetry, project reports, stories, poems, etc.), edit work for content, spelling and punctuation, produce finished copies


Speaking and Listening: Conversations, brainstorming, group sharing, interviewing, oral reading, choral reading, Readers Theatre, storytelling, book talks, short oral reports

~Mathematics~

Math curriculum includes:

1) Numbers to 1 million ( 3 weeks)

2) Patterning ( 3 weeks)

3) Area, Perimeter and Multiplication and Division-Basic Facts ( 4 weeks)

4) Statistics ( 2 weeks)

5) Multiplication (two-digit by two-digit) ( 4 weeks)

6) Geometry ( 2 weeks)

7) Division with one-digit divisors ( 4 weeks)

8) Measurement (area, volume and capacity) ( 2 weeks)

9) Fractions ( 2 weeks)

10) Fractions, decimals, and addition/subtraction of decimal numbers ( 4 weeks)

11) Transformational geometry ( 3 weeks)

12) Probability, patterns, and relations ( 3 weeks)

~Science~

-How the body functions to meet our basic needs

-Weather conditions and how they impact our lives

-Forces and Simple Machines

-Chemical and Physical Properties

~Health~

Health Curriculum which is broken into three main categories and will be integrated throughout the English Language Arts program:

-Healthy Self

-Healthy Relationships

-Healthy Community

~Social Studies~

Investigating Past Societies Students explore how we learn about the past, investigating societies through the scope of their environmental impact, social structure, decision making and interactions. These explorations will be done through the integrated Language Arts program.


~ICT Integration~

As part of the new Renew, Refocus, Rebuild initiative, students will also work towards ICT goals that include: Digital Citizenship Communication Productivity and Innovation Research, Problem Solving, and Decision-Making Technology Operations and Concepts Coding.


~Assessment~

Assessment is the day-to-day checking of student work or performance, by the teacher. The evaluation procedure involves using Curriculum Outcomes described in the Nova Scotia Program of Studies Guides giving feedback to students and reporting to parents. Assessment of outcomes is an ongoing process.


Some assessment and evaluation tools may include:

-Student teacher conferences

- Quizzes/Tests

-Collection of work samples

-Checklists

-Daily observations

- Rubrics to identify criteria and expectations of student’s work.


~Communication~

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to actively communicate concerns or seek out information about the school and their child. You may communicate through notes in the agenda, e-mail (kglawson@gnspes.ca) or phone calls (902-885-2777 ext 1591125). Communication will be through the agenda, website, phone calls, e-mail, notices, formal and informal meetings and report cards. I will be checking the student’s agendas every morning. I encourage parents to check the agenda daily, sign it and use it as a communication tool between home and school.


Parents/Guardians are asked to write bus notes on a piece of paper that is forwarded to the office. The note must include the child’s first and last name please, as well as the date. Bus notes will only be written for the student’s alternate stop.
