I love being an Elementary Core French teacher. I feel that learning French is an important part of our education not only because it is part of our Canadian culture, but because knowing languages helps us communicate with more people around the world. However, learning a new language can be hard. It requires practice, making mistakes, and learning from them. Many students are embarrassed to try speaking a new language in front of others. They experience anxiety because they can’t be perfect on the first try.
I am also a gamer. I grew up on Nintendo and continue to play video games to this day. I understand why students love video games so much and this is why I am excited to bring those gaming mechanics into the classroom along with my technology integration plan.
The purpose of game-based learning and gamification is to bring the excitement and motivation of gaming into student learning. Game-based learning is when learning is done through playing a game. For example Duolingo is considered a game for learning language and Prodigy would be a game for learning math. Gamification is when the elements of gaming are brought into the classroom such as achievements, leader boards, badges, etc. Video games are a big part of the 21st century learners life. Whether they are playing Fortnite or Roblox, the elements are the same, goals, achievements, and challenges. Applying these ideas to the classroom is authentic to students. It is part of their home culture.
This website will outline my plan to use game-based learning and gamification to motivate my 21st Century students and enhance their learning in the Core French classroom.
I believe that school should be a safe place for all students. They should feel the freedom to express themselves and who they are without fear of judgement or harm (physical or emotional). I will get to know our students and incorporate their interests, experiences, and surroundings into my teaching. This way, the content of lessons becomes more relevant and more interesting to them and will help them learn and retain what is being taught. Every student has the ability to learn and grow. They do not all learn and grow in the same way or at the same rate, but they are all capable of learning. Learning can be and should be fun. Students can learn through playing games and completing activities that are enjoyable. Not only does it help them retain what they have learned but it also teaches them skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and empathy.
Being a lifetime learner is an important part of being a good teacher. The world is constantly changing, as are our students and our schools. I will continue my education and seek out training to bring new things into my classroom in order to make me a more successful teacher. It is not only my job to teach them the outcomes required, but also to be a model of what it means to be a good citizen and leader within our community, be it the classroom, school or global community.
