EAL Literacy 10
Intended for students who have: interrupted schooling; gaps in their first language literacy and/or academic skills; require significant literacy instruction; require explicit instruction with navigating technology; are reading up to a level D/E. Students will take this course for two periods per day. Most students at this literacy level often benefit from also taking LST 10 EAL, and then taking EAL Academic Language 10 in the following semester. Students at this literacy level often benefit from taking 4+ years for their high school completion.
EAL Academic Language 10
Intended for students who have: literacy skills in their home language; attended school in their home country; a beginning to intermediate stages of English proficiency; reading at transitional level; level F/G to level Q/R; require explicit instruction with developing research skills; avoiding copy/paste;reading and writing academic text; developing language skills and strategies required for academic courses. Students entering at the EAL Academic Language level will typically take EAL 10 in the following semester, and their grade 10 English credit the following year. Depending on their progress, they may graduate within 3 years.Â
EAL 10
Intended for students who have: literacy skills in their home language; attended school in their home country; are reading at transitional level (above M); developed some proficiency in reading and writing of academic text but require more support with literature, figurative language, essay writing etc. Students may take EAL 10 semester 1, and Language and Literature 10 semester 2.
Note: Some students on EAL caseload may go directly into English 10 or Language and Literature 10 (typically students at the independent level).
