School Psychologist

What supports do they offer?

The Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education recognizes that identifying and meeting the needs of some students with special needs may require psychological assessment, intervention and support services. It is the role of the School Psychologist to provide psychological services and support to schools, students and parents / guardians in the areas of assessment, intervention and program planning for students. All schools receive service from a school psychologist. Referrals are made to schools’ Teaching Support Teams through TIENET and follow the Program Planning Process.


  • Participate as a regular member of Teaching Support Teams

  • Whole class support as recommend by Teaching Support Teams of topics that may include but not limited to:

  • Universal access to SEL/ Well-being Curriculum

  • Behavior Management

  • Classroom Culture/ Climate/ Routines

  • Support the work of building positive school culture and relational approach within school and community

  • Participating in staff development and build support competencies around team building, emotional regulation, managing anxiety for students and staff

  • Support, mentor or co facilitate the tier 1 work of:

  • Teachers, EA’s, CYCPs, School Counselors, Learning Support Teachers, ASD Specialists

  • Provide Professional development to School Communities


  • Working with Teaching Support Team to identify students who may need a more focused support on concepts of:

  • Social Skills, Anxiety, metacognitive awareness, mindfulness, executive functions, resiliency, attention, self-advocacy, gaps in learning

  • Work collaboratively with shared roles to promote more focused approach to student well-being as directed by school admin team, classroom teacher, Learning Support Teacher, school counselor, and/or Schools Plus team

As identified by the Student Planning Team work with students needing a more intensive approach This may include:

Psychoeducational assessments

Case conferences/ inter-agency meetings

Individual Student Specific Programming

Individual counseling or skill building

Functional Behavior Assessments

Suicide Intervention/ Safety Planning/ Risk Assessment

MTSS requires the collaboration and coordinated efforts of learners, teachers, families, guardians, parents and community partners in providing the appropriate programs, settings, supports, and services
