Confidentiality: 

Confidentiality means that what you tell a school counsellor is kept private. Your counsellor should not share your personal information or what you talk about with other people without your permission.

However, there are some exceptions. For example, a counsellor may need to share information if:

• Another safe adult requires information to keep you safe.

• You are at serious risk of hurting yourself or someone else.

• A child or vulnerable person or animal is being abused or is at serious risk.

• The law requires the counsellor to provide certain information. 

At school, this means that your counsellor may need to share important information with your teacher, principal, or parents in order to keep you safe. If this is the case, your counsellor will talk to you about this first.
