Our Science vision:

Science is essential in developing pupils’ ability to understand the world in which they live in and how it works. At Guru Nanak Sikh Academy, we aim to inspire and foster our pupils’ natural curiosity and interest in the world around them through nurturing their enquiring minds and developing their scientific approach to problem-solving. We believe our pupils need opportunities to experience the richness of the world around them and have the desire to be a part of the management and sustainability of their environment. Our science curriculum has a focus on developing and extending pupils’ scientific skills through a wide range of interactive, child-led and cross-curricular investigations which are both purposeful and engaging. We believe that when pupils are engaged with science, their language of communication is enhanced as they are exposed to new vocabulary and begin to express their ideas more freely. Our curriculum enables pupils to be able to understand science beyond their immediate doorstep. With science and innovation the driving force behind sustaining and maintaining our modern society, we aim to offer our pupils a wealth of positive science experiences that will encourage them to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related jobs in the future.

We have come up with a set of Science principles.

Science is good at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy when…

Science learning in Year 1

Year 1 have been learning about Humans and focusing on their five senses. They did a number of investigations to test out these senses!

Year 6

Year 6 went on a recent trip to the Science Museum! They explored how medicines have developed over time and visited a Victorian Pharmacy!

Science in the News!

SoundShirt

Engineers at CuteCircuit have created the SoundShirt, which brings music to life for those with hearing difficulties.

It is worn over the user’s clothes and allows them to feel the music.

Now, Chicago’s Lyric Opera is providing SoundShirts to Deaf and hard of hearing audience members.

Onstage microphones record the music and send live signals to activate vibrations in the shirt, which wearers feel on their shoulders, arms, or back.

Different instruments create different sounds, and some of these sounds are more intense than others.

To communicate this, the shirt provides different strengths of vibrations for the wearer to experience.

It has been developed over the last few years, but Lyric is the first opera company in the world to use it.

Lyric hopes that the SoundShirt will make their performances more accessible, enabling even more people to enjoy their music.

Year 3

Year 3 have been learning about our skeletal system and muscles. The pupils were asked to record their learning in a way they would remember it. Guryansh Golati decided to make a rap!

''I have triceps,

I have biceps,

Everyone should contract,

Everyone should relax,

We all have bones,

We all have joints,

We all have a skeleton,

We all have protection!''

Well done Guryansh- great learning!

Science ambassadors!

Are you a keen Scientist? Do you love Science? Mrs Shah is looking for a group of budding Scientists to help her continue to promote Science in school. If you are interested please write a short summary of why you would be a good Science ambassador. Please bring these to Mrs Shah by Wednesday 10th January 2024!

Science at home!

Colour-changing flowers

What you need:

• White flowers

 • Food colouring

• Water

• Small jar, vase or cup.

What to do:

1. Trim the flowers at the stalk.

2. Fill a vase or jar with water and add a little food colouring.

3. Place the flowers in the jar and leave.

4. Come back after a few hours. Have the petals changed?

Extra challenge: Try splitting the stems in half with a sharp knife (with help from an adult). Does that change the transpiration rate?

Big question!

What if all humans looked the same?
