Kyra S. Hagge

Aloha and a very warm welcome! I'm a PhD candidate and research assistant at the faculty of Coastal Studies at East Carolina University in North Carolina, USA. My research focuses on human behavior, especially pro-environmental behavior at the nexus of technology and the environment. For this, I am studying the adoption of green wastewater infrastructure in coastal Eastern North Carolina, applying a participatory modeling approach. Through interviews, surveys and Discrete Choice Analysis, I am learning about the important factors that influence decision making on an individual level. Ultimately, my research efforts will culminate in an Agent-Based Model (ABM), to understand and forecast the effects of different decisions of wastewater infrastructure on the nutrient loading of the watershed, which can be used to test incentives promoting green technology adoption by policy makers on various levels of government.

Apart from studying how human behavior affects the natural system, I am also interested in environmental/resource economics (with a special interest in marine resources and coastal ecosystems), institutional and education economics, and social network analysis. Currently I'm pursuing an additional PhD in economics at Justus-Liebig University of Giessen, with graduation to be expected in spring 2022, focussing on non-monetary benefits of education.
