About Gifted Academics
What is Gifted Academics and how to I work with General Education Teachers at FHES to meet student needs?
I meet monthly with grade level teams of the general education teachers at FHES to ensure we are best meeting all of our students' needs. I work with these teachers to provide enrichment resources for their students who are exceeding grade level standards and need additional challenges in the general education setting. Students who have met the eligibility requirements in Tennessee come to my class during the RTI block of the school day. RTI is a 45 minute block of every school day in which the student's individual needs are met based upon data and classroom performance.
During this time, I work with students to provide them enrichment and challenge them. The gifted curriculum used at GMSD is 'Envision.' Envision is an excellent research-based curriculum. Students complete in-depth research, combined with creative tasks, over a span of about 2 to 3 months. At the conclusion of the project, students have a performance piece in which they present their projects.
In addition to the Envision curriculum, student data from IEPs and the Tennessee state standards are used to provide enrichment during RTI. During gifted class, we take the state standards and go deeper into grade level content during this time. We complete daily 'brain breaks' (logic based tasks) and enjoy a number of book studies during the school year.
