Students may meet with the counselor on an individual basis if there are academic, social, or emotional concerns. Students may be referred to the counselor by a parent, teacher, or they can ask to speak with one of us. After the first meeting, parent permission must be obtained for sessions to continue (see form below). While the information is confidential, unless there is a suspicion of harm to self or others, students are encouraged to share with their parents what they are talking about in sessions.
Fill out this form and turn it into your teacher to refer your student for counseling services!
Group counseling offers students an opportunity to pursue common goals with a small group of peers. This is great for learning, and developing social skills. These groups usually meet once a week for 3-6 weeks. Students may be referred by a parent, teacher, or they can ask to speak with the counselor. Groups are formed as needed, and common topics include Self Control, School Success Skills, Family Changes (ex. Divorce), Anxiety/ Worry, Emotional Regulation, and Friendship/ Social Skills. While personal information regarding other group members is confidential, students are encouraged to share with their parents what they are learning in group. Parent permission is required to participate in small group counseling, see form above!
Classroom guidance lessons are taught to all students bi-weekly. This year we are focused on building strong character, we are using a program created by Capturing Kids' Hearts called Leadworthy to teach students the skills to help them succeed in school and life. The main goal of Leadworthy is to inspire and empower students to lead with heart. Each month, we will be focusing on a different character word to meet this goal. Below you can see our schedule for the year, and lessons your students will be getting in class.
On our road to being Leadworthy, each month we will highlight a new character trait we want our students to embody. These traits help us to grow a positive school culture that inspires and empowers students to lead with heart.
Terrific Kids is sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Germantown. Ceremonies are held five times each school year to recognize students who have been nominated by their teacher. Students who that are "TERRIFIC" are: Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inquisitive, Friendly, Inclusive, and Capable. These students may not always have the highest grades in the class; however, they do go above and beyond to demonstrate the character traits that are listed above.
Red Ribbon Week is one of the best weeks of the year! Students attending Guidance classes are presented with material that teaches drug and alcohol awareness, as well as medicine safety. These lessons are taught on a grade/age appropriate level with the focus being kept on growing and maintaining a health mind and body. We also participate in a theme every day, giving our students the chance to dress up and say NO to drugs!
