Two major divisions of languages spoken in Western Europe are Romance and Germanic. Romance languages are based on Latin, the language of the Roman Empire. The most common Romance language in Western Europe is French and in Southern Europe is Spanish and Italian. It is common for Europeans to speak more than one language—their native language in addition to English, French, or German.
