Writing Captions

Writing captions is an important part of yearbook. We follow a very certain format to make sure all captions have a uniform, consistent look, and give our readers something to process.

PROPER FORMAT FOR STORY CAPTIONS

Do not state the obvious.

It would have been very easy to say "Mrs. Chetto, L. Alpren (10) and juniors N. Madrigrano, C. Spears and M. Becker stand by the dumpster on Tuesday," but that is lazy because anyone looking at the photo can tell that right away. Be creative and fun when writing captions!

PROPER FORMAT FOR INFORMATIONAL CAPTIONS

Check for proper name spelling.

Our combined sport teams make this part very difficult if you don't know everyone from every school. Ask people on the team that you know if they can tell you the unknown's names. If their name can not be found out, simply list them as UNKNOWN.

PROPER FORMAT FOR QUOTE CAPTIONS

Quote captions are the easiest because all you have to do is use the photo subject's words. Make sure you are using the EXACT words, not paraphrasing or making up something for them to say.
