Have you seen a joyful man standing in the commons using the recycling bin as a desk? His name is Mr. Titus, the new principal, and he is excited about the future of O’Maley! He sat down with the staff of the Cherry Street Journal on Monday, January 22, 2024 for an interview that felt more like a conversation.
The first question we asked was what made him want to join our community. Mr. Titus shared that he wanted a community similar to the one he had when he was in middle school. Previously Mr. Titus worked at Collins Middle School as a 7th Grade ELA teacher, and eventually he became assistant principal. “Well, when I was looking to move up into the principal role, I knew I wanted a community similar to the one I grew up in and worked in, in Salem”, said Principal Titus.
He also shared that he loves to learn and get to know his students and get out of his office as much as possible. His original idea for his career was in the field of TV/Film. He was very interested in video editing. He also recognized that he had other interests and knew that he wanted to do something he felt mattered, something that was having a real impact on people. This led him to the world of education.
Mr. Titus also has a fun side not everyone gets to see. Mr. Titus loves to cook nice fancy dishes and play guitar. He enjoys several sports including skiing, golf, and tennis. In addition, he has two daughters, the oldest who is in 5th grade, and the youngest in kindergarten.
Our new principal has a vision for the future of O’Maley. He hopes to continue the work that is being done in the science center, for he believes that what is being done there is a unique experience that not everyone has access to. He also wants every student to feel like they are given an opportunity to belong here at school. “I want the story of O’Maley to be that kids feel welcome, excited, happy, and that they have a generally positive view of our school.”

Gloucester Daily Times
On Monday May 20, 2024 the team of the Cherry Street Journal met with Ethan Forman, a reporter, and Paul Bilodeau, a photographer, at The Gloucester Daily Times. Ethan Forman specializes in community news. The Gloucester Daily Times publishes about 5,000 paper copies 4 days a week, while the online version is published daily. Mr. Forman went to Boston College and Brown University, where he earned a degree in journalism and a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) in poetry.
He believes that the most important part of writing for a newspaper is telling the truth. Even though the reporters do their best to keep the information correct when there is a mistake they put in a correction and change it on the online version. Mr. Forman's favorite part of working at the newspaper is building community and meeting new people. Check out the Times.
