It’s been fabulous to welcome our staff and students back to Rosebery this week, as we embark on a new academic year – made all the easier off the back of a summer spent celebrating truly remarkable A Level and GCSE results.
Below, you’ll find a brief introduction from our new members of teaching staff, who some of your daughters will have been getting to know over the last few days, or perhaps are looking forward to meeting next week – we all extend them a very warm Rosebery Welcome.
I must also extend my thanks to GLF Schools, the multi-academy trust of which Rosebery is part of, for the significant capital investment they have made over the summer break. It’s not particularly glamorous, but the complete overhaul of the Couper building’s roof and windows, a new boiler system for PE, Drama and Music, LED lighting in every building, and significant electrical works, means our estate is more efficient than it’s ever been. Building on the solar panels installed two years ago – we now self-generate nearly 80% of the electricity we use on a daily basis. Slightly more glamorous is the new canteen POD in the Quad area, which we are hopeful will be ready to serve students by the end of next week – opening to all, at break, lunch and afterschool – serving a selection of the full canteen menu, which you can access here.
Of course, our relationship with GLF Schools is about far more than estates – it’s really about education and student experience, as evidenced by the Boundless Festival in July. As I spoke to last year, I will endeavour to keep families better informed of what being part of GLF Schools means for your daughter and her education at Rosebery throughout the year. For now, please find a summary of our end of Year highlights from GLF linked here.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be holding Information Evenings for parents and carers in all year groups, so if you have technical, systems or policy queries or concerns, they will hopefully be addressed through these – you should have received an email, inviting you to the evening, with a summary of dates and times available on the website here.
For new parents and carers, please do be aware that our website also contains most of the information you’ll need regarding uniform, attendance, the school day etc, listed under the Parents & Carers Section, which you can access here.
Later in Rosebery News you’ll find information about the launch of enrichment clubs and extra-curricular activities, which we will continue to add to – please do encourage your daughter to sign up to several of these, which she can do via ePraise (for new Year 7 students and families, this will be further explained on Tuesday evening) – and the launch of our School Production, SIX the Musical!
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Mrs Vieira - MFL Teacher
I'm Mrs Vieira and I’m excited to have joined Rosebery School as an MFL Teacher having transferred from another GLF school. I’ve been teaching languages for over a decade and I am originally from the vibrant city of Rio. I’m passionate about fostering curiosity, ambition, and a love of learning in my students. It’s been a real pleasure meeting my new form group. I can already tell they’re a fantastic bunch, and I’m confident they’re going to do brilliantly here at Rosebery!
Mrs White - Economics Teacher
I am really excited to be joining the Rosebery team to teach Economics. I have been a Head of Economics for the last 13 years, and am keen to encourage more Rosebery girls to take up the subject. Prior to teaching, I had a long career in the City of London working for various firms such as JPMorgan and AXA, working on a trading desk and supporting the management of Hedge Funds which helps bridge the classroom to the world around us. I really hope to inspire more female representation in studying Economics at A Level and beyond, and I am looking forward to seeing the growth of the amazing students as the year progresses.
Miss Taylor - Head of Sociology and Criminology
I am delighted to have joined Rosebery as Head of Sociology and Criminology, having taught for 8 years and worked with a Sociology exam board to support high standards in teaching and learning. I am passionate about encouraging critical thinking and an exciting understanding of the world around us in all my students, which may result in dinner table conversations! It has been a pleasure to meet so many students and I look forward to working together to help them achieve their full potential.
Ms McKay - Music and Drama Teacher
My name is Ms McKay and I am delighted to be joining the Music and Drama department here at Rosebery! I have been teaching music in the classroom and music performance for many years, to children from as young as 4 to 18 and am really looking forward to doing lots of fun, interesting and challenging lessons with our students. Musical Theatre is one of my passions, so I am excited to get involved with the wonderful Drama curriculum and, of course, the school production! I have heard so much about the amazing students here at Rosebery and feel very lucky to be joining this fantastic team.
Miss Gale - PE Teacher
My name is Miss Gale, and I’m excited to be joining Rosebery School as a new PE teacher. I’m passionate about promoting physical activity, teamwork, and personal growth through sport, and I’m looking forward to helping students develop healthy habits and confidence both in and out of class.
With a background in swimming, tennis and basketball, I aim to create a fun, inclusive, and challenging environment where every student feels encouraged to do their best. I’m thrilled to be part of such a vibrant school community and can’t wait to get started!
I am looking forward to meeting you all.
Mr Murphy - History Teacher
Hello, I am Mr Murphy. I am the new History teacher at Rosebery and a Year 7 form tutor. I did my training here last year and was delighted when I was offered a job to stay and continue working. Being able to work with such a fantastic department is such a privilege, as well as helping the new Year 7 group to navigate their first year at secondary school. I am really looking forward to what hopefully will be an amazing year.
Ms Cartron - Physics Teacher
Hello, my name is Miss Cartron and I’m delighted to be joining Rosebery as a permanent member of the Science Department. Some of you may already know me, as I was fortunate to work at the school last year while completing my teacher training. Originally from France, I moved to England in my twenties and have since had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers—including working in a brewery laboratory, teaching French, working as a gas engineer, a massage therapist, and a school science technician. These diverse experiences have all contributed to my journey and helped me discover my true vocation in teaching. I feel incredibly privileged to begin my teaching career at Rosebery and look forward to inspiring a love of science in my students.
If you take your child out of school in future without the approval of the school, and the total amount of absence is 5 or more days (they do not have to be consecutive), you will be liable to receive a penalty notice per parent/carer and the following will apply:
If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.
At Rosebery we pride ourselves on being a community school where courtesy, consideration of others and civic responsibility features strongly with our ethos, values and curriculum.
Therefore, it remains a great source of frustration that a small minority of parents and carers still feel the need to drive as close as possible to the school gates to drop their daughters at school, often stopping close to the gates, or parking inconsiderately across residential driveways.
Our girls are all more that capable of walking to school from nearby, and if they do need to travel by car, can easily be dropped on Dorking Road, on Rosebank, or in and around Epsom town centre, to then walk the final few hundred metres to school. The same is true after school, where they do not need to be collected right outside the school gates.
With this in mind, could I please insist that you do not drive down, nor park on Whitehorse Drive in the mornings, nor after school, unless there is a compelling reason why you must do so.
The mornings are a particular problem, exacerbated by the St Josephs’ drop off, but it has been a concern this week to see cars driving aggressively, blocking driveways, and even mounting the pavement where children are walking to school.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Miss Godsave and I would like to say congratulations Year 7 on completing your first few days as official Rosebery students! We have been so impressed by the calm and confident way that you have navigated the school site - you look like you have been here for ages!
We have been made aware of parents and students experiencing difficulties accessing some of the platforms that we will eventually expect students to be familiar with. As part of the Induction process, students were shown how to log in to the school computers, using details that they wrote down on their IT login cards.
During their Computing and PDC lessons over the coming weeks, students will be shown how to log on to other school systems, such as ePraise and their emails. They will also be shown how to access all of these materials from home, as currently they are using internal logins.
Thank you for your patience as we drip-feed this information to Year 7 and families; I am sure that you can appreciate that there is a lot to learn when starting a new school, and we are conscious of managing the feelings of overwhelm for all. Please rest assured that students will be given all the necessary information by their teachers very shortly.
We would also be happy to share more at Information Evening, details of which were sent to your email.

Head of Year 7
Miss Godsave
Deputy Head of Year 7
Year 8 are back! The buzz, joy and pride that I was met with on Wednesday was truly remarkable. It has been fantastic to see their energy and enthusiasm in form time and in their lessons, whereby the students are already demonstrating maturity, kindness and a strong sense of community with one another. It has been lovely to hear all things summer holidays from the students, such as their trips away, glamping experiences and spending time with family and friends.
We began the year by outlining key expectations and routines during assembly and form time. The students listened and reflected on the importance of organisation, such as being mindful of their screen time as well as the significance of attendance and being present in their lessons. I would be grateful if you could also reiterate this message at home, emphasising wearing their uniform with pride!
I am so proud of the confident start Year 8 have made and I look forward to watching them continue to thrive this year! #Year8Ready

Year 9 have had a fantastic start to the academic year, and even in this shorter first week back, students have demonstrated exceptional positivity, enthusiasm and open-mindedness with a new timetable, new lessons and new classes, excitedly starting their options subjects and meeting new teachers and students. What a brilliant start this has been to what promises to be a big and exciting year. Our Year 9 ethos this year is 'Adventure is Out There', and I am looking forward to launching the Year 9 Journey to students in next week's assembly to share with them all of the amazing opportunities that they have the chance to say yes to this year at Rosebery.
I also look forward to meeting many of you at our Year 9 Information Evening on Thursday 18 September, where I’ll be sharing more about our ethos, important milestones on the Year Journey, what to expect from Year 9 form times, PDC lessons and much more.
Ms Godwin
Head of Year 9
Mr Hewett
Deputy Head of Year 9
It has been lovely to see Year 11 re-join us this week with such determination and positivity. In our assembly this week, we spoke about the importance of this year and I talked about the saying 'everything happens for a reason', in that we are given choices in our lives. Year 11 students need to focus on what is the right choice for them and how sometimes we have to take the difficult pathway rather than the 'easier option'.
I look forward to seeing you at our Information Evening on Thursday 11 September from 5.45pm to 6.45pm in the Main Hall. Finally, it is important that Year 11 are prepared for their lessons, so thank you in advance for ensuring your child has the correct equipment for their lessons each week.
Wishing you a lovely weekend.

During the final week of last term, the Geography Department took thirteen Year 12 (now Year 13) students to Iceland. We've done this trip before with our friends at Glyn School, but this was the first time we went solo - and it was possibly the best trip ever! I'll leave Maia to describe how she felt, but the trip took in everything - from interactive exhibitions to spectacular waterfalls, black-sand beaches to glacier walking, spouting geysers to a luxurious thermal pool spa experience, and much more. We squeeze a lot into those four days and I hope the photos - and Maia's review - give you a sense of the awe and wonder of this incredible place.
Mr Boreham - Geography Teacher
My trip to Iceland felt like stepping into another world.
The waterfalls were mesmerising. I got completely soaked (no wonder I did considering I got so excited that I decided to go right underneath them). For me to be found, all you had to do was follow the wet footprints! Some plunged with a roaring force that shook the air and sent mist swirling all around, while others flowed gracefully, glowing in the sunlight. Standing there, it was impossible not to feel amazed.
The black sand beach was wild and unique. Walking along it, hearing the waves crash, and seeing the jagged basalt columns made it feel completely different from anywhere else I’ve been. It was the kind of place where you just want to stop and take it all in.
To say I've walked on a glacier was definitely something I never thought I could say. It was huge and intimidating. It was cold and quiet. It was simply unforgettable.
One of the most striking experiences was a freezing fjord near the hot pools surrounded by the hills. plunging into the freezing water and resurfacing to be met with the scenic views all around was just magical and I've never been so grateful to have gone to such a beautiful place.
Everywhere I went, Iceland felt otherworldly - raw, dramatic, and everlasting.

Group chats are becoming an increasingly common way for children to stay connected with their friends. While these digital spaces can be fun and inclusive, they can sometimes cause stress, confusion, or misunderstandings.
This guide from the National College explores the potential pitfalls children might face in group chats. It also shares practical tips on:
Setting healthy boundaries
Managing notifications
Encouraging safe sharing habits
