At the end of another busy and action-packed week, I must thank our girls for being so welcoming and accommodating of our Taiwanese visitors, for the first of their two week stay. Year 11 students have continued to benefit from support and intervention, with special thanks Team English & History for their walking talking mocks and immersion sessions. I’m also grateful to Ms Newman for taking a cohort of Year 11 students to St Hilda’s College, Oxford, as part of our programme of raising aspirations. Indeed, I should also thank Mrs Carnegie for arranging the first of our ‘Masterclass’ sessions for students in Year 12 who are considering competitive applications – they were given an introduction and overview of the importance of Politics, Philosophy & Economics and how these subjects have, and do, continue to shape the world around us. This was timely, given global unrest, political discord, and ongoing debate as to whether capitalism has created a greater concentration of wealth, and more unequal distribution of wealth than was ever desirable.
In Drama, the Frantic Assembly workshops were very well received (as ever) by our Year 9 and Year 12 students on Wednesday, and our Year 10 students had a wonderful end to the week, both at the DofE Awards Evening on Thursday, and then out at both Science Live and Southwark Cathedral today. In and amongst all of this, our LAMDA show case event took place, with the girls treading the boards with an audience, prior to their examinations on Sunday, and there have been several sporting successes this week across the year groups - you can read more about such events throughout Rosebery News.
You’ll also note that School Production tickets, for Peter Pan, are now on sale – do pop along to see it, if you can.
Finally, please be reminded that Rosebery School is closed on Wednesday, to allow colleagues to attend Miss Devonish’s funeral, which takes place in Tooting. I must also thank St Martin’s Church in Epsom, for allowing Rosebery staff to congregate there, as an alternative local venue for them to come together at such a difficult time.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

This week for Year 7, our assembly was a real highlight. The Head Girls and the Senior Prefect Team led an inspiring session, introducing our Year 7 students to the House Captains and the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) for the year ahead. It was fantastic to see the passion and dedication of our student leaders, and Year 7 were encouraged by their commitment to both school and the wider community.
In another exciting event, Year 7 had the pleasure of welcoming our Taiwanese buddies to Rosebery. Our visitors have been fully immersed in lessons and activities and it has been wonderful to see Year 7 showing such warmth and hospitality towards them. You’ve all demonstrated the Rosebery Way and lived up to our Year 7 motto by being exceptional hosts - thank you for making them feel so welcome.
On Wednesday, a number of Year 7 students represented the school in the District Netball Tournament. You played with great spirit and teamwork and should all be incredibly proud of your efforts. Enjoy the weekend, recharge, and come back ready for another week of success!

On Tuesday, we had an exciting assembly introducing the Junior Leadership Team, inspiring many of our students to think about how they can contribute to our school community. On Thursday, students enjoyed quizzes during form time, with a special thank you to 8EY for their suggestion of a food-themed quiz which prompted a lot of competitiveness!
I had the pleasure of running my first “Thank You Friday” this week, where I got to meet some incredible students who have demonstrated acts of kindness, supported their peers and who have always doing the right thing. Sharing a hot chocolate with these thoughtful individuals was the highlight of my week!
I also had the chance to visit 8EY during their art lessons this week, where students were hard at work on their chalk drawings. The effort and creativity on display were inspiring, and I was particularly impressed by some of the detailed portraits that had been completed. Well done, 8EY!
Looking ahead to next week, we’ll be honouring Miss Devonish’s memory and her passion for kindness by encouraging all Year 8 students to carry out a random act of kindness outside of school. I’d love for students to share a photo of what they did so that we can celebrate these acts together as a community.
⭐ STARS OF THE WEEK ⭐

This week our assembly was led by the new fully-formed JLT, with a message of how we can all contribute to the community. We are so lucky at Rosebery to have such phenomenal students who are willing and ready to take on responsibilities, and therefore my focus this week has been celebrating the individuals in this Year group who are showing remarkable traits.
Firstly, I'd like to congratulate all the newly appointed JLT members, Marisol F 9CY, Olivia L 9EY, Hana P 9MY and Zayna A 9PY who will be each representing their individual houses; Saoirse V D V 9PY, who will be representing the Community, Katelyn L 9EX representing Environment, Shanaya K 9EX who will represent the Learning strand, as well as Aoife C 9MY, Jade V 9CX and Evie C 9CY who are continuing their work with Wellbeing into this year. It is truly an inspiration to have so many wonderful individuals who want to make the most of all the opportunities that come their way. I am so excited to support and see the work that this group do going forwards.
It was also such a pleasure to invite a group of students to our ‘Thank you Friday’, I was incredibly pleased to have Flo S, Lily K and Sydney E 9CY, Bella P, Kate S, Katie D and Evie W 9MX join us this morning. This group have been invited today for their efforts to not only support others within the Rosebery community, but doing so consistently and looking out for people that go beyond their immediate circles. It is a great comfort to know that Year 9 look after one another and I am really proud of this group of students for how they have displayed this recently.

This week saw the start of our Brave Awards coming through after students having the opportunity to discuss and nominate their peers during form time on Wednesday. The conversations that took place allowed students to hear the recognition that they deserve. For most of us, we are modest and don’t like talking about the wonderful things we do on a day-to-day basis. I hope that these structured conversations allow students to grow in confidence, take risks and take a moment to be brave in their everyday lives.
Our assembly from the Junior Leadership Team demonstrated this bravery, as each of our Year 10 prefects stood and introduced themselves, explaining what part of the JLT they are supporting this year. We really have some exciting times ahead.
Year 10 have had an exciting week with trips, with Science Live and a trip to Southwark Cathedral. Finally, it was a privilege to see Year 10 receiving their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards on Thursday evening. Our guest speaker, Katy Parrott, spoke with such pride about her adventures and how she has been brave. She talked through her journey and how she has been on an adventure for her and not for anyone else to see how she can overcome her fears. It was reassuring for the students that she explained how she was scared but kept motivating herself throughout the journey. Most importantly, she said she didn’t ‘win’ or take ‘1st place’ in any of the races, but she was a winner in herself for succeeding.
It isn’t too late to sign up for Silver DofE as we have extended the entry date to the end of January in the hope that students too felt inspired and want to complete the next steps of the DofE journey. Anyone can take part in Silver DofE, whether they completed Bronze or not.
Have a lovely weekend and stay safe with the high winds!
🏅 BRAVE AWARD 🏅
10CX: Rebekah K - for getting onto the 3rd team in Cheer - well done.

10EY: Ava W - for being part of the Future Chef Local Finals - well done!
10MX: Jenna V - for being organised and for signing up to work experience.
10MY: Nia D - for her enrolment as a Year 10 prefect.
10PX: Beth M - for spending the day at another school participating in the Future Chef Local Finals.
10PY: Amaaya A - for her commitment to gymnastics and being brave with new skills.

While Year 11s can sometimes think of their GCSE year as nothing but revision and exams, we are pleased to confirm that this is not the case, as this week alone has shown. Thanks to the vast number of opportunities available, Year 11 have had a jam-packed week full of chances to develop both academically and personally.
In addition to our interventions for English, Maths, Science and options subjects, which continue to be well attended, this week Year 11 all had the chance to benefit from a ‘walking, talking’ mock, led by the English department. The sessions saw Year 11s progress through a mock paper, with their teachers demonstrating how best to tackle each question –all in real time. Furthermore, on Wednesday, students of History were lucky enough to be given a bespoke ‘immersion afternoon’ which allowed them to focus their revision and exam skills further. On Thursday, we were lucky enough to be accommodated by St Hilda’s College, Oxford, who offered the chance for a small group of students to visit Oxford University, meet current students and experience academic life there, in the hope that this will inspire Rosebery students to one day consider applying to the most prestigious institutions. Then on Friday, Year 11 RS students were taken to visit Southwark Cathedral, a trip that is sure to inspire and bring the subject alive.
Alongside the academic development undoubtedly provided by these events, we were pleased to also have the chance to celebrate students’ many other talents this week, thanks to the Duke of Edinburgh Award celebration evening. Accompanying this year group on their Silver DofE expedition last year was a real highlight, and we are so pleased that so many of them have also completed the other required elements – and had it all signed off – to receive their much-deserved awards.
There are so many students who would deserve the title of ‘Rosebery Remarkable’ for this week, but we wanted to highlight Rowan W 11MX as an outstanding example of how accomplished our Year 11s are. In addition to a packed timetable and revision schedule, Rowan also plays hockey 4- 5 times a week as part of Women's and U16 teams. Recently, Rowan and her team competed in the England Hockey Under 16 Indoor Hockey National Finals of the Super 6s Championships 2024/25, finishing as silver medallists. We know that this take significant sacrifice and commitment, and we are very proud of Rowan.
Congratulations to Rowan W 11MX

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is taking place from Monday 10 to Friday 16 February 2025. It is an annual, week-long celebration of apprenticeships and anyone involved with them. The week brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to highlight the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses, and the wider economy.
NAW will highlight how apprenticeships are an excellent option to consider for young people wishing to start a career, for employees looking to progress in their current role or retrain for a new career, or for employers needing to fill skills gaps to help grow their business.
As a parent or carer, you want to be able to guide and advise your child towards the best opportunity for them and there are so many options available to your child on leaving school. Amazing Apprenticeships have created Parent Zone to help you to explore those options. You can click HERE to view this.
The National Apprenticeship Show is taking place in February at Sandown Park Racecourse. They are holding a Parents/Carers/Individuals Dedicated Evening Opening which is taking place on Tuesday 11 February 2025 from 3.30pm to 6.00pm. For more information and to register, please click HERE.

On Tuesday, the KS3 Squash Team travelled to Downe House School in Thatcham for the second round of the National Schools Championships. We went in for our first found of games against Bedford Modern School, and what a round of games it was. Aoife VDV 7PY played first and set the standard with a two-game win. Then, Arlia P 7CX stepped up to play their fourth seeded player and, again, won both games. Cali Bessant stepped up next and won her first game comfortably with a score of 11-2 but lost the second with a score of 11-4. This meant it went to a third and final game, where Cali found her form and won 11-1.
Next was Hazel P 9EX, who carried on the winning streak with convincing wins of 11-4 and 11-2. This was followed by India S 8CX who still remains unbeaten with 11-1 and 11-5 scores. After such a great start, confidence was high as we started the next round against Downe House. The same order of play meant that Aoife went first followed by Arlia and, unfortunately, Rosebery lost both these matches. Next came our top-ranking players, who convincingly won all their games, scoring a total of 66 points to Downe House's 19. After winning the first two rounds, we got a bit comfortable as we knew this meant we had secured a top two placing as there were only four teams in our group. This meant the pressure was off in the final round against Benenden School. Unfortunately we lost our first two rounds of games until Cali and India won the next two in some very competitive and exciting games. Hazel had the last game (and all the pressure) but on this occasion Benenden were just too meticulous and took the victory!
That being said, finishing second in the pool has secured us a place in National Schools Finals! I cannot believe I am writing this for a second year in a row but it truly is such a privilege to see these girls shine in their sport. They are so deserving of this place and I send the most enormous congratulations to you all! I also need to say a big thank you to Maja L 12B and Jessie P 12E, who have travelled with us to both rounds and have coached and scored the girls to this victory - we couldn't have done it without you.
So, please keep your eyes peeled for the results of the finals which will take place in Edgbaston in March. In the meantime, Rosebery can safely say they are in the top 16 squash teams in the country!
